Swan Hill's three-day carnival gets underway on Friday with an eight-race program featuring two of the meeting's key attractions, the Golden Topaz and the Elvstroem Classic.

Swan Hill Favourite - Race 3 No. 3 Aqua Storm

There were excuses for the start-two failure as an odds-on favourite, with EIPH and lameness detected in Aqua Storm, who was spelled after that December 23 miss.

The five-year-old is now under the care of Shane Jackson, a small but very astute Warrnambool trainer who places his horses well.

He showed potential in his lead-up work, hence the market support on debut at Pakenham when runner-up over 1400m.

While 1200m appears on the short side for his stable debut, the 800m Hamilton jump-out on May 27 indicated he is forward enough for six furlongs fresh.

Aqua Storm was second and good late behind useful short-course sprinter Cool As Ice there, while his main threat looks to be Magnus Maximus, who arguably should have won first-up before being set a big task when unsuited at Geelong.

Jockey Declan Bates is in decent touch, having recently recorded winning doubles at both Ballarat and Bendigo.

He also rode a winner and two second-place finishers at Sandown on Wednesday.

Bates reunites with Barbie'sdreamworld for her return assignment after partnering her to a second-up Geelong victory last campaign.

He was also aboard for her narrow Country Final defeat at Flemington and Group 3 placing at Caulfield before a spell in a handy edition of the Summoned Stakes.

The mare resumes at 1200m, which is short of the distances she found winning form over in spring, but she has won her only attempt at the trip and showed plenty of intent when bolting in during a May 27 jump-out, while there remains upside as a four-year-old coming off a career-best preparation.

Swan Hill Feature Bets - Race 7 No. 1 Dashing & No. 10 Steel Move

It is a very open edition of the Golden Topaz, with in-form and hard-fit galloper Salsa Fellow heading the market as a deserving favourite.

However, this hat-trick bid looks much tougher than the assignments he has been facing.

Of the outsiders, Dashing has to be included, bringing strong fresh statistics that include a Wangoom Handicap victory over this trip first-up in April last year.

The gelding also won the Swan Hill Cup third-up in that campaign and, while he carries 60kg, is a proven weight carrier who looked impressive in a second-up autumn jump-out.

Another first-up contender is Steel Move, a consistent Godolphin sprinter who won a Flemington jump-out on May 8, while the penny appeared to drop in December when he recorded two VOBIS wins over this distance and may be the runner with the most upside in the field.

Swan Hill Value Bet - Race 8 No. 11 Seethru

Seethru was unsuited second-up at Pakenham when settling back in a slowly run race.

Despite that, he made inroads late and recorded the fastest final 400m and 200m of the May 15 event.

The rise to a mile is a positive third-up for the grey, who proved too classy for a BM56 field on resumption in a race that has already produced two subsequent winners.

Ability was evident early in his career, with Seethru being spelled after a six-length start-two victory before bouncing back from two winter disappointments with consecutive metropolitan placings in early spring.

That runner-up effort through Zambardo is an excellent reference, and while Seethru could be the one peaking here, Beach Pad, Nishino Crescent and Stop The Rock are all outsiders with claims, with the latter prepared by Patrick Payne, a trainer who is airborne at present.
