Via Sistina had to settle for third-place finish as favourite when contesting the Apollo Stakes, however, it was still a solid return from the six-time Group 1 winner and she'll be suited up in distance second-up.

She has lost both second-up attempts in Australia, although the latest was on heavy ground via a fifth-of-eight finish in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

Ladbrokes have Via Sistina as a $2.20 favourite to win the 2025 Verry Elleegant Stakes, while Fangirl ($3.50) is on the second line of betting.

The six-year-old proved too brilliant for her rivals when taking out the Apollo Stakes first-up and she was a second-up winner last campaign when successful in the 7 Stakes, which is run over the Randwick mile.

Ceolwulf ($4) rounded out his 2024 spring campaign with back-to-back Group 1 victories and those triumphs both came over this track/trip.

He has no winning first-up form to his name, which adds further merit to his recent Apollo Stakes resumption and the son of Tavistock has won two of three second-up appearances.

Verry Elleegant Stakes Winners

The Verry Elleegant Stakes (formely Chipping Norton Stakes) headlines the first Group 1 meeting of the calendar year in Sydney, running alongside the Surround Stakes.

Gaining Group 1 status in 1986, this 1600m weight-for-age feature has arguably become a stronger race since that upgrade, with Super Impose, Tie The Knot, Winx, Verry Elleegant and Anamoe all champions to have won this event since 1986.

The winner of the Verry Elleegant Stakes is exempt from ballot for both the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup later in the autumn, so there's generally a good mix of gallopers in the final field.

Verry Elleegant (2022), Anamoe (2023) and Think It Over (2024) have won the last three editions of the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
