The Sydney Cup is one of four Group 1's contested on day two of 'The Championships' at Royal Randwick.

Early favourite Cleveland (barrier 17) caught the eye on Australian debut with a fifth-place finish over 2400m in the Tancred Stakes on March 25.

A strong son of Camelot that contested the Irish Cesarewitch (3332m) last September with 63kg, he now has just 51kg under handicap conditions, carrying 8kg less than his first-up assignment.

Joseph O'Brien also prepares Baron Samedi (barrier 20), a gelding that won seven races on the trot over 2020/2021, which includes three Group victories.

Last year's Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip (barrier 16) has the topweight of 59.5kg and history is against the Australian Bloodstock import, with My Good Man (60kg - 1978) the only horse to carry more weight to win the Sydney Cup since 1970.

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have also accepted with Explosive Jack (barrier 4), High Emocean (barrier 19) and Alakahan (barrier 19), while Chris Waller has triple representation through Selino (barrier 14), Surefire (barrier 6) and Timour (barrier 3).

A final field of 20 have accepted for the 2023 Sydney Cup.

Sydney Cup Winners

Originally run as the Jockey Club Handicap in 1862 and rebranded as the Sydney Cup in 1866, famous early winners of this feature include The Barb and Carbine.

The Sydney Cup was given Group One status in 1980, which was celebrated in fine style with one of Australia's best ever gallopers in Kingston Town taking it out that year.

Champions have taken out this 3200m feature, with Carbine, Galilee, Kingston Town, Tie The Knot and three-time Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva all included on the honor roll.

Etah James (2020), Selino (2021) and Knights Order (2022) have won the last three editions of the Sydney Cup.
