The Spring Champion Stakes market has understandably warmed to Elliptical (barrier 1) early, with the Freedman colt bringing the strongest form lines through the Caulfield Guineas, where he was runner-up to Golden Mile.
A son of Dundeel, who recorded the first of six Group One victories in the 2012 Spring Champion Stakes, this three-year-old looks ready to tackle 2000m for the first time.
Although reduced to 1600m this year and delayed four days due to an abandoned meeting, the Gloaming Stakes is the traditional lead-up to this Group One and Sharp 'N' Smart (barrier 8) took that out narrowly in a tight finish, with a narrow margin over Williamsburg (barrier 2) and Matcha Latte (barrier 7).
After a Golden Rose path, Promitto (barrier 5) handled the 1800m of the Craven Plate last Saturday against seasoned gallopers and should find this much easier against his own age group, although he's deep into his prep now.
Chris Waller has three runners, preparing Conqueror (barrier 4), Coppleson (barrier 3) and Manzoice (barrier 12) for this 10 furlong feature,
Fillies have won three of the last six editions of this race and there's two leading contenders this year with Champagne Stakes winner She's Extreme (barrier 10) and Renaissance Woman (barrier 9), who was a stylish winner of the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday.
