The 2026 South Australian Derby is shaping up to be an exciting race, with Accidental Bid leading the betting odds at $3, following a dominant win at 2000m. Other top contenders include Engine Of War and Silvasista, both at $6, having shown impressive performances in recent races. After saluting over a mile on his Australian debut, Accidental Bid was even more dominant stepping to 2000m on April 16, recording a commanding 7.75-length victory in a BM62.

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper is the outright favourite for the 2026 South Australian Derby, quoted at $3 with Unibet Australia.

While his first Australian campaign tapered off late, including a well-held 11-of-16 finish in the Victoria Derby, Engine Of War has been building nicely through three autumn runs, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in last Saturday’s Chairman’s Stakes over 2000m.

He shares a $6 quote with Silvasista, who was freshened after breaking her maiden and has since won her last two starts following a pair of March runs over a mile, including a 3.5-length victory in the VRC St Leger at Flemington.

Fillies have a strong recent record in the South Australian Derby, winning the past two editions of this 2500m feature, which bodes well for both Silvasista and After Summer.

The Dominic Sutton-trained filly brings strong Sydney form lines, with back-to-back Group 1 placings in the Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks, while her spring campaign culminated in a third-place finish in the VRC Oaks.

After Summer is quoted at $9 alongside Kaye Jay, a gelding who has been very consistent throughout his first campaign and has since won a jump-out following a fourth-of-13 finish in the Australian Derby on April 4.

South Australian Derby Winners

The South Australian Derby was first run in 1860, making it one of Australia’s oldest and most historic staying features.

Run over 2400m at Morphettville, the race has long been a proving ground for emerging three-year-old stayers, often identifying future stars capable of stepping through the ranks in the spring.

Champions such as Mummify, VRC Derby winner Rebel Raider, and popular Melbourne Cup hero Subzero have all claimed this prestigious event during their careers.

Dunkel (2023), Coco Sun (2024) and Femminile (2025) have won the past three editions.
