Kingsford-Smith Cup 2026 Betting Tips - Headley Grange is the Value Play
The 2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup at Eagle Farm assembles a top-class field for the celebrated 1300m Group 1 sprint. The favorites include Jimmysstar, Headley Grange, and value pick Another Wil. Headley Grange emerges as the best each-way tip after a stellar 2025, while Jimmysstar is favored to win but still needs to break through this prep. Another Wil is considered a valuable outsider who could improve sharply second-up. Historical prestige, strong contenders, and competitive odds make this an unmissable event.
- Headley Grange is the best each-way tip in the Kingsford-Smith Cup
- Jimmysstar is favoured in this Group 1, despite a winless prep
- Another Wil offers value and could improve second-up
The final Group 1 contest on Saturday’s Eagle Farm meeting is the Kingsford-Smith Cup, with a strong field assembled for the 1300m weight-for-age feature.
First run in 1957 as the Lightning Handicap, the race was renamed the BTC Cup in 1968 before adopting its current Kingsford-Smith Cup title in 2017 following the Brisbane Racing Club merger.
Now one of Queensland’s premier sprint races, the honour roll includes champions such as Black Caviar, Buffering, Apache Cat and Takeover Target, while the race remains a key lead-up toward the Stradbroke Handicap.
At $4.60 with NextBet, Jimmysstar is favourite for the 2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup.
2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup Tips
2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup Best Bet - Headley Grange
Headley Grange had a terrific 2025, with the gelding recording seven wins across the calendar year.
The six-year-old handled the rise in class when taking out the Group 3 Cameron Handicap in fast time before defeating Gringotts, who is a weight-for-age Group 1 winner.
Although there are some earlier 1600m references in weaker company, a mile appears to stretch Headley Grange at this level, and the gelding proved that in the Doncaster Mile when third-up, but still wasn’t disgraced behind the smart Sheza Alibi.
The son of Headwater then covered ground throughout the All Aged Stakes before a freshen-up, while his early autumn form was terrific, running the fastest closing sectionals of the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes on return.
The quinella from that race subsequently saluted in Group 1 company and, aside from a dominant Autumn Glow, Headley Grange arguably produced the best run of the George Ryder Stakes.
2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup Next Best Bet - Jimmysstar
He has to be the starting point in this race despite not saluting in four runs this year.
The only genuinely disappointing performance from the gelding came in the William Reid Stakes on return, although the five-year-old has improved since that effort.
The pick of those efforts was a third-place finish in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes when coming from back and off the speed, which was completely against the pattern and bias of that Randwick meeting.
There were some excuses in the Doomben 10,000, which was still a competitive fourth, while coming back to 1200m and onto the tighter-turning circuit were both negatives.
The bigger expanses of Eagle Farm are in Jimmysstar’s favour, as is the rise back to 1300m, and while it’s getting close to D-Day, this could be the best set-up he’s found all prep.
2026 Kingsford-Smith Cup Value Bet - Another Wil
A stablemate to Jimmysstar, Another Wil could be a sharp improver off the back of his Doomben 10,000 return.
Fitness appeared to give out late on the Soft 7 in that resumption, where there was an opportunity to get the eventual winners’ backs, but the gelding wasn’t travelling well enough and was resuming off a decent spell following a failed two-run prep earlier in the season.
We know Another Wil has the class at weight-for-age level, with the highlight being his CF Orr Stakes victory in February last year, which was followed by an unlucky All-Star Mile attempt.
The seven-year-old remains lightly raced for his age and, with questionable speed engaged in this field, don’t be surprised if connections adopt more positive tactics second-up.
Jamie Melham also returns aboard Another Wil, and the hoop has partnered the gelding in eight of his nine career wins.
