While it was a good return in the All Aged Stakes when getting home over 1400m, a trip that is too sharp for Half Yours at this level, perhaps it was not the workout he needed to be a serious winning contender in the Hollindale Stakes last start.

Especially when Pride Of Jenni gets in the mood and has things her own way rolling along in front, which was the case on the Gold Coast, that left the five-year-old vulnerable late in the race.

However, there is now a platform to springboard from with that strong 1800m effort under the belt, while stepping to 2000m on Saturday, combined with rain-affected ground, only brings him further into contention.

Tipped out after becoming just the 13th horse in history to complete the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double, the gelding has the class to measure up at weight-for-age level around these trips.

Half Yours gets his chance to prove that on Saturday in the Doomben Cup, where there should still be improvement to come third-up.

2026 Doomben Cup Value Bet - Vauban

This Waterhouse & Bott-trained import has had an interesting career, having previously been prepared by Willie Mullins before unsuccessful Melbourne Cup bids with the former stable.

Since switching yards, the form has been a little mixed, although both of his Australian victories have come under Waterhouse and Bott.

It is also worth noting that those two triumphs both came first-up over 2000m, including his March 14 return victory before a slightly flat effort when third in the Tancred Stakes.

Even so, it was still a sound performance in a strong race, while perhaps keeping him on the fresh side is the key now as an older galloper, with a tick-over trial completed since his last run on March 28.

Vauban is the fresh contender here who did not contest the Hollindale Stakes, which could hold him in good stead, while a testing 2000m could play right into his hands.
