The 2025 Cox Plate headlines a blockbuster Moonee Valley program on Saturday, October 25, marking the final running of Australia’s premier weight-for-age race at its famous home before redevelopment begins.

The $6 million contest over 2040m will also close the meeting — a fitting finale for The Valley’s storied amphitheatre before the Cox Plate shifts to Flemington in 2026 and returns to a new-look Moonee Valley in 2028.

She recorded a dominant eight-length victory in last year’s Cox Plate, breaking the 2040m track record at Moonee Valley in the process.

Via Sistina is following the same path in her Cox Plate defence, having resumed in the Winx Stakes before contesting both the Makybe Diva Stakes and Turnbull Stakes.

Was her third-place finish in the Turnbull Stakes a touch underrated? Lost, sure, but there was more merit to the run than the commentary suggests.

The ten-time Group 1 winner was flushed out early and exposed after Golden Path dropped out of the running line, leaving her with nothing to take her further into the race.

Also, while she dominated in last year's Cox Plate, Via Sistina was hardly airborne going into that, with a plain second-up run followed by a narrow Turnbull Stakes victory.

Treasurethe Moment produced a standout performance first-up in the Memsie Stakes, defeating Mr Brightside, Buckaroo, Fangirl and Antino in a high-quality edition.

A minor setback soon after proved costly, with the four-year-old unable to rediscover that same spark in two subsequent runs, although she has still filled the runner-up spot on both occasions.

Off her Memsie Stakes triumph when dominating a strong WFA lineup, she would have had the Cox Plate at her mercy had she held that touch.

There were question marks regarding her campaign after the Might And Power Stakes loss last time, and she’s clearly showing plenty at home to warrant pushing on.

With an outstanding three-year-old season and a slick resumption, Treasurethe Moment looked a potential star — perhaps this is when she makes a statement.

2025 Cox Plate Value Bet - Nepotism

He’s by Brutal out of Brigite, an unraced half-sister to Black Caviar, making him a close relative of the legendary mare.

The Champagne Stakes winner has taken longer to come to hand this preparation but produced his best effort of the campaign when finishing seventh in the Caulfield Guineas.

He was set a huge task in that last Group 1 attempt when settling a long way back, and the colt was also held up at key stages in the run home.

With some question marks around the market elects and Sir Delius also dropping out of the race, it’s well worth a shot at stumps with just 49.5kg to carry.

The last three-year-old Cox Plate winner was Shamus Award in 2012, but there have been a host of good performances since, with Broadsiding (2024), Anamoe (2021 — should’ve won), Castelvecchio (2019) and Yankee Rose (2016) all placing.
