2025 Spring Champion Stakes Best Bet - Federalist

I was a huge fan of his dam Arcadia Queen, a three-time Group 1 winner who could’ve been a genuine superstar if not for injuries. Federalist is her first foal and, while yet to finish in the money from five appearances, he’s always shaped as a type who would relish 2000m.

He reaches that trip third-up after recording the second-fastest closing sectionals of the Listed Dulcify Stakes, where the colt made solid inroads over 1600m. That followed what was effectively a barrier trial on return via the Ming Dynasty Stakes, and the runner-up from that race went on to claim the Caulfield Guineas.

Both the 1400m and 1600m proved too sharp in Group 1 attempts during his first campaign, yet those Sires’ and Champagne runs were still encouraging and hinted that longer would suit.

The rise to 2000m looks ideal now, and with natural improvement third-up, he gets the chance to show the staying qualities suggested throughout his early preparation.

He’ll need luck from a wide draw, but the price compensates for that risk, and with the extra journey now in his favour, he appeals as a genuine each-way play in the Spring Champion Stakes.

2025 Spring Champion Stakes Next Best Bet - Attica

He’s on the second line of betting and is just being shaded for favouritism by Shangri La Boy—who could be the better stayer—but Attica might be the classier of the duo.

The Spring Champion Stakes often lacks depth, which is evident through a long line of past winners all being prominent in the market, so history is against taking on the favourites.

Attica comes through the Dulcify Stakes, where his turn of foot proved too strong for his rivals over 1600m, and he’s since completed a tick-over trial.

The main queries here are whether his brilliance can stretch to 2000m, and he also tackles this race at start four of his first campaign.

Still, he arrives off a terrific last-start performance and put that race away quickly, especially given he came from the rear.

2025 Spring Champion Stakes Value Bet - Tambeloa

I’ve always had some time for Tambeloa, who broke through for us at decent odds when taking out a Warwick Farm maiden at start three.

He was then effectively first-up on September 25, which served as a clean-out run over 1500m before stepping up to 1800m for the Gloaming Stakes.

While never in contention there behind Shangri La Boy, his effort was sound when doing his best work late, running the third-fastest last 200m of the race.

It’ll take plenty to turn the tables on that winner, but there’s still upside with the son of Tagaloa, who gets visors applied for the first time.

Jay Ford has been aboard Tambeloa in his last four starts, and the veteran hoop has ridden two Spring Champion Stakes winners, including the 2009 edition on the 50/1 chance Monaco Consul.
