2025 Caulfield Cup Best Bet - Half Yours

He looks so well placed dropping back to handicap conditions, where Half Yours sits near the bottom of the weights with 52.5kg after carrying 56kg in the Turnbull Stakes.

Sir Delius, Antino and Via Sistina — the Turnbull trifecta — are among the best 2000m horses campaigning in Australia, and this gelding came from back and wide to charge home for fourth.

The sectionals backed it up, producing the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m of the Turnbull, and as we saw in his prior Naturalism Stakes triumph, he can settle closer.

He ticked the 2400m box with a dominant display in the Caloundra Cup in July before a freshen-up, and last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Knight’s Choice was produced from that same Queensland feature.

2025 Caulfield Cup Next Best Bet - Middle Earth

Ciaron Maher is aiming for his third Caulfield Cup win, and Mark Zahra stays aboard Middle Earth, with the noted big-race rider also chasing his third victory in the famous handicap.

Despite all European wins coming in the 2400m–2800m range, this is the first time he gets past 2000m in Australia — albeit he’s only had six starts Down Under.

He won the first of those in March before contesting two Group 1 weight-for-age races, and his August 30 resumption at Caulfield was encouraging, running the race-fastest last 200m.

It’s all been about timing his peak for this event, so the two subsequent efforts can be forgiven — particularly the latest when slow away in the Turnbull Stakes.

2025 Caulfield Cup Value Bet - Deakin

We had Deakin as a smokie in the Turnbull Stakes, and that third-up performance was an honest one when finishing sixth-of-fourteen over 2000m.

He’s clearly looking for further now, and there’s a platform for him to be peaking in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, with three runs completed and improvement shown each time.

The six-year-old secured a ballot exemption into the 2025 Melbourne Cup with victory via the Roy Higgins Quality in March, so there was never going to be much early intent this campaign.

Half Yours was clearly the sharper late of the two in the Turnbull Stakes, however, they still crossed the line together and Deakin looks ready to attack the staying features.
