Wimbledon Day 4 Tips, Predictions & Best Bets

Second round action continues at Wimbledon on Day 4, highlighted by former finalist Matteo Berrettini squaring off against Arthur Fils on Centre Court.

We had an average 4/8 day yesterday, but with a solid 17/24 record overall at Wimbledon across the opening three days, we look to land more winners on Thursday July 2.

Read on below for our eight best bets for Day 4, along with reasoning for each selection.

Eala vs Joint Tips & Prediction

  • Joint entered this tournament with just one tour-level win since January and needing three sets against a 44-year-old Serena who could barely move playing her first singles match in four years isn't a great sign
  • Obviously, Joint is yet to win back-to-back tour-level matches all year and is 0-2 in major second rounds
  • Eala is in superb form, winning 10 matches on grass this swing, including a WTA 125 title in Birmingham and a semi-final in Berlin, taking two top 10 scalps along the way
  • Joint won the only previous meeting, but she needed to save four match points in Eastbourne last year and that was when she was at the peak of her powers - she's way down on that form and Eala has gone to another level, so I'm expecting a routine win for the Filipino here

Fery vs Virtanen Tips & Prediction

  • Love this spot for Fery to reach a maiden third round at a slam
  • Fery made the quarter-finals of Queens in the lead up to this tournament and was an easy four-set winner over Dzumhur in his opener
  • Virtanen obviously registered the biggest win of his career over Shelton in R1, but more often than not we see a letdown after such a huge occasion, especially when a player hasn't been in this situation before
  • Good chance Virtanen emptied the tank in that Shelton win, while he also tends to play lots of tiebreaks, so give me Fery with a +2.5 games start

Fritz vs Kypson Tips & Prediction

  • Fritz has seemingly recovered from his knee issues and has won eight of his 10 matches on grass this swing, including a routine straight sets win over Lajovic in R1
  • Fritz has made at least the quarter-finals in three of his last four Wimbledon appearances and is arguably the second-favourite for the title as it stands
  • Kypson has only played one match since getting injured in Rome and got a favourable draw vs McDonald in R1 - that was just his third ever win on grass
  • Kypson is playing the second round of a slam for the first time and I don't think he can challenge his higher-ranked countryman here

Munar vs Fearnley Tips & Prediction

  • Munar is very underrated on grass - he made the third round of Wimbledon last year, beating Bublik and Marozsan along the way, while he took the scalp of Queens champion Cerundolo in dominant straight sets in his opening round
  • Fearnley has been experiencing a tough season at tour-level, winning just three matches for the year and was stretched to five sets in his opening round win over Michelsen, who just collapsed after being two sets up
  • Munar won't hand him the match like that and I don't think Fearnley has the consistency or overall form on the board to hang with the Spaniard over the course of five sets

Berrettini vs Fils Tips & Prediction

  • I'm liking a relatively long contest here between a former Wimbledon finalist and a player who was in top five form before an injury disruption
  • Berrettini played out four tiebreaks vs Wawrinka in R1 and only had his serve broken once while serving down 29 aces - however, on the flip side, he only broke the 40-year-old on one occasion too
  • Fils strolled past a dangerous Collignon in his opener and looks to have recovered from his latest injury setback
  • The only previous meeting saw one tiebreak before Berrettini retired - if these two split sets, then I'd give this a very good chance of landing

Mensik vs Dimitrov Tips & Prediction

  • Not convinced with Mensik on grass yet - he's 7-9 on the surface and needed five sets to survive the unheralded Toby Samuel in his opening match
  • Dimitrov looked pretty good in his straight sets opening round win over Sweeny and obviously has unfinished business at this tournament, where he was leading Sinner by two sets last year before suffering that serious pectoral injury
  • Dimitrov received a wildcard into this year's Wimbledon and I think he will be determined to repay the faith and make up for the huge disappointment of last year - backing the Bulgarian to be very competitive here

Rybakina vs McNally Tips & Prediction

  • Again, not really convinced with Rybakina's form right now - she seems to have struggled with the opportunity to take the No. 1 ranking from Sabalenka over the last couple of months
  • Rybakina lost to Boulter and Eala in her lead-in matches on grass and needed three sets to survive Boisson in her Wimbledon opener
  • McNally has been in solid form, winning six of her nine matches on grass this swing
  • The American pushed Rybakina to three sets in their most-recent meeting in Beijing last year and can put up another big fight in this one

Noskova vs Osario Tips & Prediction

  • Noskova has been in superb form all year and picked up a grass title in the lead-up to Wimbledon, beating Pegula in the Berlin final
  • Osario has lost four of her last five matches on grass and isn't what you'd call a natural on this surface right now
  • Noskova eased past Osario 6-2 6-2 in their most-recent encounter in the BJK Cup last year and I'd expect a similar sort of straight sets win for the Czech on the Wimbledon lawns
