Over 23.5 games and a close contest is tipped for this heavyweight second round Canada Masters showdown on Wednesday, but Joao Fonseca is the better hardcourt player at this moment and should have enough firepower to pepper the one-handed backhand of Stefanos Tsitsipas and come away with the win on his debut in Montreal.
Fonseca returns to action for his first tournament since Wimbledon and he will be looking to launch his North American hardcourt summer with a good performance here. The Brazilian remains one of the brightest rising talents in tennis, but as is the case with most youngsters, he still needs to work on his consistency. Nevertheless, it's been a promising year for the 19-year-old and if he find a groove early this summer, Fonseca has the ability to go deep at these Masters 1000 tournaments, along with the US Open.
Meanwhile, Tsitsipas could just be in the midst of some sort of resurgence, winning the Gstaad title on clay, taking a set off Alex de Minaur in Washington last week and coming through the dangerous Martin Damm in straight sets in his Montreal opener. Parting ways with his dad as coach was the best move for him and now Tsitsipas looks like he could be more of a factor moving forward for the rest of the year.
It sets up an intriguing second round clash here in Montreal. Tsitsipas is a decent chance at the upset and there's a possibility he catches Fonseca cold, with the Brazilian playing his first match in over a month.
But this is a matchup that should favour Fonseca in these conditions. He should be able to attack the Tsitsipas one-handed backhand, which would see him receive plenty of short balls right in his hitting zone. That's the fairly simple game plan and if he can execute, Fonseca should be able to come away with the victory.

It's been a solid season for Fonseca after the early stages were disrupted by a back injury.
The 19-year-old made the fourth round at Indian Wells and quarter-finals at Monte Carlo and Munich before reaching his first major quarter-final at Roland Garros, where he upstaged Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud along the way.
Fonseca backed it up with a third round run at Wimbledon, but fell to an on-fire Roman Safiullin in straight sets.
The Brazilian is playing the Canada Masters for the second time and will be hoping for a better showing than his debut in Toronto last year, where he lost to Tristian Schoolkate in straight sets.

Tsitsipas has worked his way back towards the top 50, but he's still operating well below the level that once took him to World No. 3 and saw him contest both Grand Slam and Masters 1000 finals.
While there have been encouraging signs, the Greek remains some way from rediscovering his best tennis. He did boost his confidence by claiming the title in Gstaad a few weeks ago, although that success came on clay against a field missing many of the tour's biggest names following Wimbledon.
The 27-year-old had an opportunity to build on that momentum in Washington, but his campaign ended immediately with a three-set loss to Alex de Minaur, a player he has dominated in the past.
Having slipped outside the direct entry cut for the Canadian Masters, Tsitsipas was forced to come through qualifying, where he comfortably defeated home hope and World No. 831 Keegan Rice 6-3, 6-4 to secure his place in the main draw.
Canada has previously been one of Tsitsipas' better Masters 1000 events, with a runner-up finish in 2018 and a semi-final appearance in 2021. However, he's endured a miserable run at the tournament since then, losing five matches in a row until a 6-4 6-4 victory over Martin Damm in his opening round on Tuesday.
The Greek broke the big Damm serve four times and won 82 per cent of points behind his own first serve.
