Tenth seed Holger Rune will attempt to end the fairytale run of qualifier Valentin Vacherot when the pair square off in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals on Thursday.

Vacherot has put together one of the most unlikely runs of the year in Shanghai, with the World No. 204 winning six matches from qualifying to reach his first ever quarter-final at tour-level, let alone in a Masters 1000. It's by far the best ever run by a Monegasque player, with Vacherot's cousin Arthur Rinderknech also making the quarter-finals in Shanghai in what is an incredible story.

However, it's likely Vacherot's run comes to an end in the last eight. Rune may not be playing his best, but he's got far more experience in these situations and he should be building confidence with each victory in Shanghai. The Dane also has big incentive and motivation to keep winning here - he's currently 12th in the ATP Race to Turin and a potential title in Shanghai would propel him into contention. I'm backing Rune to win this in straights.

Rune has registered a 34-20 record on the season coming into this contest, languishing just outside the world's top 10 at No. 11.

The Dane has showcased glimpses of his best tennis - most notably by winning the ATP 500 title in Barcelona and finishing runner-up at the Indian Wells Masters, but overall, he's failed to make progress on tour and is instead going in the opposite direction.

It's certainly a far cry from the form that took Rune to the 2022 Paris Masters title as a teenager.

The 22-year-old knows he can't afford to take Vacherot lightly - his last three defeats have come against players ranked outside the top 65, including Terence Atmane in the Cincinnati quarter-finals.

Rune has benefitted from a very comfortable draw in Shanghai, toppling the out-of-form Sebastian Baez and Ugo Humbert before chopping down the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in three sets.

Valentin Vacherot Form

It's been an extraordinary tournament for Vacherot, one that is potentially life and career-altering, with one more win propelling him into the top 100 for the first time.

Currently ranked No. 204 in the world, Vacherot looked like he was on his way for a top 100 debut last year, but he missed six months of action through injury and has struggled for most of this year during his comeback.

However, the pieces were clearly there and it's all come together in Shanghai, with Vacherot winning six matches from qualifying to make his maiden tour-level quarter-final, rising to a live ranking of No. 130 in the process.

After taking out Nishesh Basavareddy and Liam Draxl in three sets in qualifying, Vacherot defeated Laslo Djere in straight sets in the opening round of the main draw before taking the scalp of Alexander Bublik, who has been one of the best players on tour over the last few months.

The Monegasque player wasn't done there, coming through Tomas Machac via retirement before coming from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor 4-6 7-6(1) 6-4 in a R16 match that finished close to 1am local time.

Vacherot is on the run of his life, but he's never been in this situation before and Rune - even below his best - is a big step up in class that he's used to facing.

This is a huge opportunity for Rune to build some momentum and confidence - he should take it.
