Holger Rune, aiming for the ATP Finals, starts his Nordic Open campaign against Marton Fucsovics in Stockholm. Rune has shown inconsistency this season, but historically performs well indoors. He's currently ranked 12th in the Live ATP Race but needs momentum. Fucsovics, returning to form after falling out of the top 100, poses a credible challenge. While Rune leads their head-to-head 1-0, this clash is expected to be competitive. Expect a thrilling matchup as Rune seeks to edge out in what should be a tight three-set contest.

ATP Finals hopeful Holger Rune begins his Nordic Open title bid in Stockholm on Thursday when he takes on Martin Fucsovics in the second round.

Outside of a couple of tournaments, it's been a disappointing season for Rune, but he still finds himself within striking distance of the ATP Finals - but he'll need a very prolific European indoor swing over the next month. However, Rune has played his best tennis in these conditions before, famously winning the Paris Masters in 2022, so at 12th spot in the Live ATP Race, he's still certainly in contention. Meanwhile, Fucsovics has rediscovered some of his best form over the last couple of months after tumbling outside the top 100 earlier in the year and will be out for a statement victory here.

I think this is shaping as a close contest. Rune remains vulnerable and below his best, while Fucsovics is a former top 30 player who is capable of troubling the top guys at his best. I'm going to back Over 22.5 total games, with Rune edging this in three.

Rune leads 1-0, winning their only previous meeting 6-3 7-5 in the second round of the 2023 Miami Masters.

Rune has compiled a 34-21 record on the season heading into the Nordic Open, dropping outside of the top 10 and with a lot of work to do in order to qualify for the year-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

It's been a disappointing last couple of years for Rune - when he surged to that 2022 Paris Masters title as a teenager, he was touted as one of the next big stars in tennis alongside Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

However, things haven't materialised in that fashion for Rune, who seemingly struggles with the weight of expectation and pressure.

The Dane has shown glimpses of his best tennis - namely winning the Barcelona title and finishing runner-up in Indian Wells - but there's been too many early exits for a player of his calibre.

Rune had a big opportunity for a second Masters 1000 title last week in Shanghai, but he fell victim to the fairytale of eventual champion Valentin Vacherot in the quarter-finals.

Marton Fucsovics Form


Fucsovics has propelled himself back into the top 100 with a strong back-half of the year, heading into this encounter with a 19-12 record at tour-level for the season.

The Hungarian dropped outside of the world's top 130 in May, but he's propelled himself back into the world's elite with a bang, coming into Stockholm back at No. 55.

Fucsovics had a solid grass swing where he made the quarter-finals of Stuttgart and the third round of Wimbledon as a qualifier, but his best result of the year came shortly before the US Open, where he secured his third career ATP title in Winston Salem.

The 33-year-old went out in the opening round of Shanghai to Jaume Munar, but got back to winning ways in Stockholm earlier in the week, taking out Jesper de Jong in straight sets in the opening round.

Verdict

Fucsovics is back to some solid tennis and Rune remains in underwhelming form.

I can see a tight contest playing out in Stockholm, but I'll tentatively stick with Rune to survive in three.
