Felix Auger-Aliassime faces Arthur Rinderknech in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals, targeting his third consecutive semi-final appearance. Auger-Aliassime has been in excellent form, winning 11 of his last 13 matches and aiming for a return to the ATP top ten. Despite Rinderknech's strong performance this year, including reaching his first Masters 1000 quarter-final, Auger-Aliassime's current form and versatile gameplay make him the favorite to win in straight sets.

Auger-Aliassime is one of the form players on tour and comes into this clash having won 11 of his last 13 matches since the start of August, with his only two defeats in that period coming against Jannik Sinner. The Canadian is edging closer to a top 10 return and is a major contender for the season-ending ATP Finals as he continues to accumulate valuable race and ranking points. Meanwhile, Rinderknech is part of one of the most amazing stories of the year - not only has he advanced to his maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final, but his cousin Valentin Vacherot has come from nowhere to reach the semi-finals as a qualifier ranked No. 204 in the world.

Unfortunately, I don't see Rinderknech joining his cousin in the final four. Auger-Aliassime is in simply irresistible form right now - his serve is lethal (he's held in 28 of 29 service games in Shanghai), while he's finishing points off with aplomb at the net. The forehand is firing on all cylinders. I'm backing the Canadian in for another straight sets victory and a third semi-final on the bounce.

Head To Head

Auger-Aliassime leads 2-0, with both meetings coming in 2025. FAA prevailed 7-5 6-3 in the Mallorca second round before Rinderknech retired while trailing 6-7 2-4 in the Cincinnati R32.

Felix Auger-Aliassime Form

Auger-Aliassime has compiled a 37-19 record on the season, winning two ATP titles and inching closer to a top 10 return, currently ranked at No. 13 - and he will move to No. 11 if he wins this match.

It was a bright start to the season for Auger-Aliassime as he picked up titles in Adelaide and Montpellier, along with reaching the final in Dubai and the semis in Doha.

After a quiet middle stage of the year, Auger-Aliassime is back to his best, putting together a 11-2 record since August, reaching the semi-finals of Cincinnati and the US Open, where it took Sinner to stop him on each occasion.

Auger-Aliassime has racked up five top 10 scalps for the season - including one this week in Shanghai. After easily taking out Alejandro Tabilo and Jesper de Jong, the Canadian produced a fantastic performance to beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4 6-2.

Arthur Rinderknech Form

What a turnaround in form it's been for Rinderknech - after barely winning matches during the first half of the season, he's gone 10-3 since the beginning of August.

It all really started with an upset win over Alexander Zverev in the opening round of Wimbledon and the Frenchman has continued his momentum on tour.

Indeed, Rinderknech is 6-3 vs top 20 opponents since June after previously going 0-16 against them from the start of 2023.

Rinderknech made the second week of a slam for the first time when he reached the R16 at the US Open, while he's now advanced into his maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final, defeating multiple top 20 opponents in the same tournament for the first time after taking out Zverev again before a straight sets dispatch of Jiri Lehecka.

Verdict

Rinderknech is in great form, but I think Auger-Aliassime is on another level. The Canadian can match him in the serving department and has more versatility from the baseline.

I'm backing FAA in straights.
