Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Time for Medvedev to finally beat Tien in Shanghai
Daniil Medvedev is set to face his recent nemesis, Learner Tien, in the Round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters. Medvedev, who has had a challenging year, lost twice to Tien recently, but he is determined to bounce back, having improved his form under new coach Thomas Johansson. Tien, the high-flying teenager, has impressed this season, but fatigue from a rigorous schedule may be a factor. Medvedev was leading Tien 7-5 4-1 before cramping issues last match, and he aims for a straight sets victory this time.

Medvedev has endured a nightmare campaign this year and lots of it can be traced back to Tien upsetting him in five sets in the second round of the Australian Open. If that wasn't enough, Tien also recovered from 5-7 1-4 down to overcome Medvedev in the Beijing semi-finals last week. The 19-year-old has put together a wonderful breakout season and is now the highest-ranked teenager in the world ahead of Joao Fonseca after winning nine of his 11 matches this Asian swing.
However, I'm backing Medvedev to turn the tables here and earn a measure of revenge. The Russian has put his head down since changing his coaching setup and looks determined to reverse his fortunes before the year draws to a close. Medvedev was in complete control of Tien before cramping issues led to his demise last week in Beijing - I don't think he lets that happen again and I'm backing him in for a ruthless straight sets victory.
Head To Head
As mentioned, Tien leads 2-0, beating Medvedev in five sets to start the year at the Australian Open before prevailing via retirement in Beijing last week.
Daniil Medvedev Form
It's been a horror season for Medvedev - he's slipped out of the top 10 to No. 16 in the world after registering a 32-20 record heading into this contest.
Nothing has gone right for Medvedev and he bit the bullet by parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara, who guided him to World No. 1 and a US Open title.
Linking up with Thomas Johansson, Medvedev has showcased some improved form and dedication, heading into this clash having won five of his last six matches.
There's a real opportunity for Medvedev in Shanghai - the draw has completely fallen apart and he's one of the only players left with proven Masters 1000 pedigree. It's been a good showing so far for Medvedev - he's come through Dalibor Svrcina and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets to reach the R16.
Learner Tien Form
It's been a brilliant breakout season for Tien - he's risen from No. 120 at the start of 2025 to a live ranking of No. 37, becoming the highest-ranked teenager in the world.
Tien has proven his ability to beat the very best players in the world - he's put together a 7-6 record against top 20 players so far in his short career, but he's yet to do it at Masters 1000 level, going 0-2 in that arena.
The 19-year-old was unlucky to draw Novak Djokovic in the first round of the US Open, but he's won nine of his last 11 matches since, reaching the quarter-finals in Hangzhou before a run to the ATP 500 final in Beijing last week - although his quarter and semi-final matches ended with his opponents retiring.
Tien has showcased great physical and mental endurance to keep his run going in the brutal Shanghai conditions this week, overcoming Miomir Kecmanovic and Corentin Moutet in three sets before taking out Cameron Norrie in straights to make the R16.

Verdict
Time for Medvedev to solve this Tien puzzle and claim his first win over the teenager.
Medvedev was dominating Tien 7-5 4-1 last week before cramping, while the American has got to be feeling fatigued after a hectic schedule this Asian swing. Medvedev to win this in straights.
