Casper Ruud vs Matteo Berrettini Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Berrettini targets upset over Ruud in Tokyo
Former top 10 players Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini face off in the second round of the Japan Open in Tokyo. Ruud is struggling on hard courts and has been inconsistent since his injury at Madrid. Berrettini, returning from another injury break, looks more fit after a strong first-round win. Berrettini leads their hardcourt head-to-head and the fast Tokyo surface suits his style. The pick leans towards Berrettini pulling off a slight upset, contingent on his fitness. Berrettini is making yet another comeback from injury after missing the entire North American hardcourt summer. The Italian returned in Hangzhou last week and was clearly rusty, but he was looking more match fit in a straight sets victory over Jaume Munar in the first round of Tokyo earlier this week. Ruud meanwhile continues to struggle on hardcourt after a disappointing summer in the States, going down in the first round of Cincinnati and the second round of the US Open.
Ruud has never been beyond the second round in Tokyo and his last quarter-final in Asia came back at Beijing 2023. Berrettini has won two of the three previous hardcourt meetings between the pair and the faster conditions in Tokyo should suit his game more. It all comes down to Berrettini's physical state - if he's playing injury-free, then the Italian looks good value as the slight underdog in the Japanese capital.
Head To Head
Ruud leads 4-3 in completed matches, but as mentioned, Berrettini has won two of the three hardcourt encounters.
Casper Ruud Form
Ruud comes into this showdown with a 30-12 record on the season, but he's dropped out of the top 10 and is in poor form heading into this Asian swing.
The Norwegian claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title in Madrid midway through the year, but he suffered an injury during that tournament and that contributed to a disappointing second round exit at the French Open.
There's not really been much to cheer about since - Ruud has failed to win back-to-back matches in four of his last five tournaments, most recently going down to Raphael Collignon in the second round of the US Open.
Ruud was in big danger of an opening round exit in Tokyo when he trailed Shintaro Mochizuki by a set and a break, but his Japanese opponent's inexperienced showed and he ultimately only won one more game for the entire match, with Ruud coming away with a 4-6 6-1 6-1 victory.
Matteo Berrettini Form
Berrettini has registered a 14-12 record in yet another injury-affected season, with the Italian dropping out of the top 50 as a result.
The former World No. 6 just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to his body - Berrettini showed what he can do when fit earlier this season, taking top 10 scalps over the likes of Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, but he just can't seem to string together multiple tournaments without getting injured.
Sidelined since Wimbledon and missing the entire US Open swing, Berrettini made his return in Hangzhou last week, but wasn't anywhere close to ready in a straight sets defeat to Dalibor Svrcina.
However, Berrettini looked much stronger in his Tokyo opener, taking care of Jaume Munar by a 6-4 6-2 score. The 29-year-old was looking good in Tokyo last year, but was forced to retire in the second round when leading eventual champion Arthur Fils by a set.

Ruud is absolutely there for the taking in Tokyo - the question is whether Berrettini has the matches under his belt to take advantage.
I'll take a punt on the Italian registering the upset.
