The Jets have been wildly inconsistent to start the A-League season - they've scored the second-most goals in the competition, but have conceded four more than the next worst side. There's no question over their attacking ability, but Newcastle's defence remains suspect. In saying that, the Jets held firm last week to secure just their second win of the season over previously-unbeaten Auckland FC, while City come into this fixture following a 0-0 stalemate with the Mariners.

However, City were in action in the Champions League that week, so a somewhat flat performance was expected. With full preparation for this encounter, I'm expecting a much better City display here. You don't know what you're going to get with the Jets, but City are usually reliable and they've won their last four games against Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium. City's defence for the most part is rock solid too - I'll back the visitors to frustrate Newcastle and come away with the three points.

Head To Head

City are unbeaten in seven of the last eight meetings between the teams, including winning four straight at Turton Road. However, the Jets emerged victorious as $5.50 outsiders at AAMI Park in the most-recent clash between the teams in Round 14 last season as Lachie Rose's second-half goal proved the difference.

Newcastle Jets Form Analysis

Probably the toughest side to get an accurate read on heading into Round 7, with the Jets producing some immaculate football and horror performances in an extremely inconsistent start.

Newcastle demonstrated they have the ability to defeat any side in the competition with their Australia Cup trophy run, backed up with a blistering 5-2 win over Melbourne Victory and last week's 2-1 triumph over Auckland FC on the road.

The Jets became the first side since December 21 last year to defeat Auckland at Go Media Stadium in the regular season, with Will Dobson and Lachie Rose getting on the scoresheet in the torrential rain across the ditch.

However, Newcastle still have issues at the back - they've conceded 15 goals in six games, leaking 3+ goals in defeats to the Mariners, Brisbane and Sydney FC, while they also suffered a poor 2-1 loss at home to Perth Glory.

Melbourne City Form Analysis

Solid but unspectacular would probably be an accurate description of City's start to their A-League title defence.

Aurelio Vidmar's side are flying in the Asian Champions League and strongly positioned to make it to the knockout stages, but it could be coming at a cost to their aspirations of going back-to-back in the A-League.

City have only won two of their six league games coming into this contest, with their last two outings seeing them lose 4-1 to Adelaide and draw 0-0 with Central Coast.

Max Caputo has emerged as one of the competition's best young strikers and the 20-year-old will be hoping to add to his four A-League goals for the season in this encounter.

A bit tempted to back the Jets as home underdogs, but they are insanely erratic and have lost three of their last four games - including a home defeat to lowly Perth.
