Mexico vs Australia International Friendly Tips & Prediction - Socceroos continue World Cup preparations

Mexico faces Australia in an international friendly at the Rose Bowl as both teams prepare for the upcoming World Cup. Mexico enters the match in impressive form, going unbeaten in six games and conceding only one goal this year, making their defense hard to break. Australia, meanwhile, has shown inconsistency, especially in attack, and recently suffered losses in North America. With Tony Popovic set to finalize his squad, fringe Socceroos get a final chance, but the prediction strongly favors a solid Mexico win and a clean sheet.

Mexico vs Australia

Mexico vs Australia International Friendly Tips & Prediction

The Socceroos are tasked with a tough pre-World Cup assignment when they come up against one of the host nations in Mexico at the Rose Bowl in California on Sunday (AEST).

With Australia squaring off against another host nation in USA in their upcoming World Cup campaign, this is the perfect preparation as the big dance gets underway in two weeks time. Tony Popovic will finalise his 26-man squad for the World Cup following the completion of this game, so we can expect the Socceroos manager to tinker with his team and give fringe players one last chance to prove themselves.

Unfortunately, I can't see Australia claiming a positive result here. The Socceroos' last foray into North America for friendly fixtures didn't end well, while Mexico are in great form and are proving very hard to break down defensively. This could well pose a problem for the Socceroos, who struggle with creativity and attack at the best of times - and there's question marks if the team's only three decent attacking players in Nestory Irankunda, Mo Toure and Jordy Bos even take the field here, with their starting side places for the World Cup surely confirmed.

I'm taking BTTS - No, with Mexico coming out on top with a clean sheet. El Tri probably won't be going all out, so a correct score of 1-0 or 2-0 appeals.
  • Mexico are unbeaten in six games in 2026, winning four
  • Mexico have conceded just one goal this year
  • Mexico have kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight wins
  • Australia lost two friendlies vs Colombia & Venezuela without scoring in North America in November
  • Mexico have seen BTTS - No in five of their last six games
  • Seven of Mexico's last nine matches have seen Under 2.5 goals

Mexico vs Australia Head To Head

These two sides played out a 2-2 draw in a friendly back in 2023. The Socceroos went ahead 2-0 after goals from Harry Souttar and Martin Boyle before Raul Jimenez and Cesar Huerta equalised for Mexico.

Mexico Form Analysis

Mexico are in strong form as they continue to build towards what they hope will be a successful World Cup campaign in front of their home fans.

El Tri are unbeaten in six matches this year, winning four and earning solid draws against Belgium and Portugal.

Javier Aguirre's side have already got some match practice in ahead of the World Cup, easing to a comfortable 2-0 win over Ghana last week.

Aguirre fielded a team of local Liga MX players for that encounter and we can expect the manager to include some European-based stars for this clash, with Mexico opening the World Cup in two weeks time against South Korea in Group A.

Australia Form Analysis

It hasn't been entirely convincing from the Socceroos, but they made up good ground to qualify for their sixth straight World Cup.

However, concerns mounted in November, with Australia failing to fire in attack as they went down 3-0 and 1-0 to Colombia and Venezuela respectively. Those defeats came after a 2-1 loss to USA, who the Socceroos will face at the World Cup in a few weeks' time.

Tony Popovic's side did restore some confidence with a pair of wins over Cameroon and Curacao on home soil in March.

Nestory Irankunda scored a double, while Mo Toure had a great finish to the season for Norwich in the English Championship, scoring nine goals in 11 games.

Mexico vs Australia Team News

Mexican captain Edson Alvarez could get more minutes under his belt after returning from injury last week.

Raul Jimenez and Santiago Gimenez are suffering from illness and an ankle injury respectively and might be rested.

Brian Gutierrez and Guillermo Martinez score in the 2-0 win over Ghana and might get another chance to impress here.

Meanwhile, tough to say what Popovic is going to do with the Socceroos, but we can expect the likes of Mat Leckie, Nishan Velupillay, Connor Metcalfe, and Awer Mabil to get a chance after Riley McGree went down with a heartbreaking hamstring injury for Middlesbrough in the playoffs last weekend, ruling him out of the World Cup.

Mathew Ryan, Alessandro Circati, Lucas Herrington, Kai Trewin, Kye Rowles, Paul Okon Jr, and Tete Yengi were late additions to the Socceroos camp on Monday and could receive game time - especially Yengi, with Australia lacking depth up front after Popovic decided to send home Mitch Duke.

Verdict

Mexico are tipped for the win, keeping a clean sheet as Australia's struggles in attack continue.
