In AFL 2026 Round 12, the Sydney Swans are heavy favourites against a young, injury-hit Richmond Tigers side. Sydney, currently 2nd on the ladder with a dominant home record and strong attacking form, are expected to capitalize on Richmond's defensive struggles and low scoring rate. Key forwards Joel Amartey and Charlie Curnow are tipped for big games, with the Swans predicted to comfortably cover a high points line. Richmond's efforts are hampered by injuries, and another challenging match is anticipated for the Tigers faithful.

Sydney Swans vs Richmond Tigers, Round 12 2026 - Expert Prediction

It will be a tough watch for Richmond fans in AFL Round 12 with the young Tigers to come back down to earth with a thud when they take on a Sydney outfit that are on the rebound.

The Swans went down to Geelong by 27-points in Round 11 and are 2nd on the ladder with a 9-2 win-loss record, while Richmond are at the opposite end in 17th with a 2-8 record.

The Tigers knocked over Essendon by 18-points in the ‘Dreamtime at the G’ but the opposition they meet here is at a completely different level. The big question is what do we do with Sydney at $1.02 in the early betting? It is impossible to take that head-to-head price, but the line of 60.5 points looks very achievable for the Swans.

It is only a small sample size, but Sydney’s two matches this season against bottom five sides have resulted in a 62-point win over Carlton at the SCG and a 128-point demolition of West Coast. Richmond have also struggled badly against the competition’s stronger sides, losing by 60 to Fremantle and 68 to Gold Coast.

Sydney have won all five matches at the SCG this season and have produced dominant victories over GWS, Brisbane and Carlton at the venue. Their two closer games came against Collingwood and Melbourne and they were inaccurate in both of those matches, wasting plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

The key here will be Sydney’s efficiency going inside 50. Their fast ball movement and ability to generate scores from turnover allows them to set up deep entries to their tall forwards, which becomes difficult to defend over four quarters. Richmond’s undermanned defence could really struggle once the Swans get momentum and field position on their side.

The other major factor is Richmond’s inability to score consistently. The Tigers are last in the competition for scoring at just 66 points per game and against current top 10 sides that drops further to only 54. Sydney restricted Richmond to just four goals the last time the two sides met and another low total for the Tigers looks well and truly on the cards.

Take Sydney at the line, while Joel Amartey and Charlie Curnow both appeal strongly in the goal markets. Amartey kicked four against Geelong last weekend and has now booted 14 goals in his past six matches, while Curnow has kicked 17 goals in his four matches this season against sides outside of the top 10 on the ladder. For Tigers fans, Tim Taranto comes in with some solid form and performs well against the Swans

  • Sydney restricted Richmond to just four goals the last time the two sides met
  • The Swans have taken out their two matches this season against bottom five sides by 62 points and 128 points.
  • Joel Amartey kicked four goals last weekend
  • Tim Taranto has had 25+ disposals in his past four matches against Sydney

Head to Head Stats

Sydney were 44 point winners the last time the two sides met, restricting Richmond to just four goals for the game. But the Tigers have won two of the past three. The two sides have not met at the SCG since 2022 in a match that went the way of the Swans by six points.

Notable player performances in recent head to heads have come from;
  • Isaac Heeney (Swans)- 25+ disposals in his past two against the Tigers
  • Tim Taranto (Tigers)- 25+ disposals in his past four against the Swans
  • Joel Amartey (Swans)- 2+ goals in his past two matches against Richmond
  • Charlie Curnow (Swans)- as a Blue he booted seven goals in his past three against the Tigers.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

Sydney have a win-loss record of 10-2 and remain one of the standout teams in the competition despite their seven-game winning streak coming to an end against Geelong last weekend. They dropped to 2nd spot on the ladder with Fremantle one game clear on top.

The Swans were beaten around the contest and struggled to deal with Geelong’s front-half pressure, but still showed patches of their attacking class through quick ball movement and their dangerous key forwards.

Joel Amartey continued his strong form with four goals, while Logan McDonald and Charlie Curnow also found opportunities despite limited supply. Sydney’s ability to generate scores from turnover and move the ball quickly by hand remains a major strength, while Brodie Grundy, Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner continue to drive the side around stoppage and transition.

Amartey has kicked 14 goals in his past six matches, while Curnow has 14 from his past five. Heeney has picked up 25+ disposals in five of his past seven matches, while Riley Bice racked up a team-high 34 disposals last weekend.

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

Richmond produced one of their most complete performances of the season in the 18-point Dreamtime at the G win over Essendon, responding strongly after a disappointing fortnight prior. The Tigers set the tone early through contested football, pressure and effort around the ball, with their younger players continuing to step up despite the club’s injury crisis.

Their midfield adjustments and improved intensity at stoppage helped them compete far more consistently across four quarters, while the aerial contest and forward pressure from their young key forwards stood out in difficult conditions.

Tom Lynch and Steely Green booted two goals each, while Jayden Short and Tim Taranto both had 30 disposals. Pat Riakol picked up a Rising Star nomination with his effort to rack up 27 disposals. Short has had 25+ disposals in his past three matches, while Taranto has reached that in two of his past three.

Opportunities up forward have been limited for Lynch with Richmond averaging just 66 points per game in 2026. The premiership player has kicked 11 goals from seven matches this season. Seth Campbell and Steely Green lead the goalkicking tally with 12 majors from 11 matches.

Sydney Swans vs Richmond Tigers Team List & News

  • to be updated after team selection on Thursday

Sydney Swans Team News

The Swans are sweating on the fitness of Tom Papley after the forward finished the Geelong match with calf tightness, while Malcolm Rosas Jr suffered an ankle injury and was unable to return after half-time. Both players are important to Sydney’s forward-half pressure and speed, with the club expected to assess them closely during the week. James Jordon is likely to continue playing a run-with role after spending time on Bailey Smith and Tom Stewart against Geelong, while the Swans are otherwise expected to back in the core group that has driven their strong form throughout 2026.

Richmond Tigers Team News

Richmond continue to battle injuries, with Jonty Faull entering concussion protocols after a heavy collision against Essendon, while Tom Lynch will be monitored after suffering a larynx injury during the Dreamtime clash. The Tigers are still managing one of the longest injury lists in the competition but received strong contributions from several younger players last weekend, increasing pressure on selection. There may also be reinforcements on the horizon through the mid-season draft and VFL form, with the club continuing to search for depth as the season progresses.
