Port Adelaide vs Fremantle, Round 19 2026

The ladder leaders look set to tighten their grip on top spot, with Fremantle's elite defence expected to squeeze the life out of an undermanned Port Adelaide.

Fremantle have been the benchmark side of the competition all season and this shapes as another opportunity to strengthen their hold on top spot. Port Adelaide have shown enormous resilience in recent weeks, but with Zak Butters unavailable and Mitch Georgiades also absent, they look light on firepower against the AFL's best defensive side.

Expect Port Adelaide to make life difficult early. Their defensive system has kept them competitive throughout the season and they rarely allow games to get away from them at Adelaide Oval. However, scoring has become the bigger issue, particularly against quality opposition, and the absence of Butters removes their most influential midfielder and ball winner.

Fremantle's midfield should gradually take control through Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Luke Jackson. The Dockers are the competition's No.1 ranked defensive side, restricting opponents to just 70 points per game this season, and they have consistently strangled lower-ranked sides by denying quality inside-50 opportunities.

Up forward, Josh Treacy, Patrick Voss and Jye Amiss provide multiple scoring avenues, but there is value further down the order with Murphy Reid. The classy youngster has already shown a knack for impacting the scoreboard against the Power and should enjoy opportunities if Fremantle dominate territory.

Port Adelaide will scrap, defend strongly and keep the contest respectable, but the Dockers' midfield depth, defensive pressure and ability to control field position should prove decisive. Fremantle to win, the total match points to stay under, Caleb Serong to collect another 25-plus disposals and Murphy Reid appeals as outstanding value to kick two or more goals.

  • The total match points in Port Adelaide's past eight matches at Adelaide Oval have averaged just 154.
  • Fremantle are conceding an average of just 41 points per game against sides in the bottom six this season.
  • Caleb Serong has recorded 25+ disposals in each of his past six matches against the Power.
  • Murphy Reid has kicked six goals in his two matches against Port Adelaide.

Head to Head Stats

Fremantle have taken out the past two matches between the two sides, including the most recent meeting by six points, which was played in Round 21 last season at Adelaide Oval.

Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;

  • Caleb Serong (Freo) – 25+ disposals in five of his past six matches against Port Adelaide.
  • Ollie Wines (Power) – 25+ disposals in his past 10 matches against the Dockers.
  • Mitch Georgiades (Power) – Two or more goals in his past five matches against the Dockers.
  • Murphy Reid (Dockers) – Six goals in his two matches against the Power.

Port Adelaide Form Analysis

Port Adelaide sit 14th on the ladder with a 6-11 record and remain mathematically in the finals race despite last week's 14-point loss to St Kilda. It was a brave performance given the Power lost Zak Butters, Mitch Georgiades and Lachie Jones to injury during the match, yet still mounted a second-half comeback and actually finished with more scoring shots in the 10.13 (73) to 13.9 (87) defeat. Prior to that, they had won consecutive matches against Adelaide and North Melbourne.

Jason Horne-Francis again showed why he is becoming one of the competition's premier midfielders, collecting 23 disposals, eight clearances and two goals against the Saints. Corey Durdin added two goals, while Aliir Aliir was outstanding in defence with 12 intercept possessions. Port Adelaide are now 3-6 at Adelaide Oval this season, although four of those defeats have come by three points or less and another by only 14 points, highlighting how competitive they have remained at home.

The challenge this week is replacing the influence of Butters and Georgiades. Port have defended strongly for much of the season and should again keep the contest tight, but generating enough scoring opportunities against the AFL's best defence shapes as a significant hurdle.

Fremantle Form Analysis

Fremantle continue to set the pace in 2026, sitting on top of the ladder with a 15-2 record and two games clear after a stunning 38-point win over Sydney. The Dockers trailed during the third quarter before exploding with 12 of the final 14 goals, including a club-record 9.5 (59) in the final term. They remarkably recovered from a goalless first half to kick 15.10 (100) after the main break.

Josh Treacy starred with four goals and has now kicked two or more in nine of his past 10 matches, including three or more in four of his past six. Patrick Voss has kicked at least two goals in eight straight matches, Luke Jackson has managed two or more in four of his past five, while Caleb Serong (28 disposals) and Andrew Brayshaw again drove the midfield. Fremantle also continue to boast the AFL's No.1 ranked defence, conceding just 70 points per game this season.

The Dockers have consistently responded to challenges throughout the season and their combination of elite midfield depth, defensive pressure and multiple scoring options makes them extremely difficult to stop. Against a Port side missing key personnel, they look well placed to continue their march towards the minor premiership.
