Settling further back than expected over 1000m, he raced keenly before laying in once clear, yet still battled on well for third behind the progressive Flip The Pattys.
That unbeaten galloper had also impressed at his previous start when bolting in at Northam.
Dark Avalanche returns to his home circuit on Wednesday and has been competitive in all three runs at Bunbury, the last two being a narrow maiden miss at start three before resuming with a nice victory here on December 28.
The form around his final run last preparation has also stacked up, with Urquhartss Bluff winning another three races since, the latest in Saturday metropolitan company.

Bunbury Value Bet - Race 5 No. 4 Barney Rommel
Steady improvement was a feature of Barney Rommel's summer preparation despite regularly starting at generous odds.
After a competitive debut fourth at Bunbury, he recorded his first placing at start three when runner-up at Pinjarra behind Hubble's Dragon, who later franked that form with a Class 1 victory before finishing second in the Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy.
Barney Rommel recorded a breakthrough of his own at his next appearance over this track and distance before rounding out that campaign with an even performance at Ascot.
After a fair return at Pinjarra on April 27, he was effectively first-up again following the gap between runs on June 24, where Common Touch dominated before making it a hat-trick at Belmont last Saturday.
Not only will he strip fitter from that performance, but getting to 1400m is also in his favour, and Barney Rommel is an each-way chance at a big price.

Bunbury Roughie - Race 7 No. 2 One Punch
A drop back in trip didn't suit One Punch at Bunbury on June 28, while a slow getaway only made the task harder.
His first-up effort over seven furlongs at Pinjarra had considerably more merit, sticking on well before fitness gave out late in a race that has already produced two subsequent winners.
While it's a sharp rise in distance on Wednesday, it's perhaps a home-track set-up worth respecting and a more suitable assignment than his latest appearance, while Tash Faithfull takes back the reins.
She was aboard for both of his victories last winter, the first of those ending a long drought on the Bunbury All-Weather track.
It's unconventional placement, but for a galloper who has been competitive in deeper company than this, One Punch is more than capable of giving this a shake on an each-way basis, with a return to firmer ground also in his favour.
