Caulfield stages a strong nine-race metropolitan program on Saturday with the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes headlining a meeting packed with competitive events.

Rod Fenwick Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 5 Bon Mistress

She is suited back in grade from a Listed attempt in Adelaide, while dropping back in distance is also a positive.

The five-year-old returns to a mile here, a trip she placed over second-up at Mornington behind Seafall.

That form has been terrific, with Seafall winning her next two starts, including a dominant victory in much stronger company at Sandown last Saturday.

Ideally there is an upgrade or two in the track, and Bon Mistress has the fitness base to contest it if conditions are in the Soft range.

Bon Mistress is going much better than she was last prep when fourth in a similar affair at Pakenham, where she covered ground off a platform that is not dissimilar to this, while the form has also stood up through her Sandown return in March.

Rod Griffiths Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Caulfield Favourite - Race 5 No. 8 Sea The Storm

It remains unclear whether connections proceed on rain-affected ground on Australian debut, given all of Sea The Storm’s overseas form came on either Good tracks or synthetic surfaces.

On paper, however, this looks a suitable starting point fresh on the 54kg minimum against a lot of out-of-form rivals.

The main danger appears to be El Rocko, who should stride forward, although Sea The Storm can potentially cross and settle handy with that rival.

The five-year-old completed a solid piece of work when winning the second autumn trial on the Caulfield Heath circuit on May 14 under Craig Williams, who remains aboard on race day.

Sea The Storm has never finished outside the placings in 10 career starts, recording five wins and five placings, while he is prepared by a noted fresh stable.

JRA Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Caulfield Best Bet - Race 6 No. 11 Simurgh

Craig Williams has another strong chance on Saturday aboard Simurgh, who is aiming to go back-to-back over the Caulfield 2000m.

The import saluted in style over this track-and-trip on May 9, which came at his second Australian appearance following an eye-catching Pakenham debut over a mile.

This is technically a rise in grade, although Simurgh could well be the only progressive horse in the field.

The Hayes-trained galloper should be capable of at least holding his form third-up over 2000m and looks well placed to go back-to-back.

A bolter to consider is Aberfeldie Boy, who looked a promising stayer during his three-year-old season and resumed with a terrific stable debut for Tom Dabernig during the Warrnambool Carnival.

Sportsbet Bel Esprit Stakes Tips (Race 8)

Caulfield Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 12 Bustling

He was unfairly maligned following his eastern states debut in the 2024 Run To The Rose, with that performance appearing too poor to be true.

The son of Frosted arrived from Western Australia with an excellent early record that featured four wins and a placing from his first five starts.

Resuming off a lengthy spell with 62kg on May 9, Bustling was still respected in betting and the effort itself was certainly a pass mark.

The first two runners simply had a little too much dash down in the weights and the gelding is certainly open to improvement second-up.

Although rising to Listed level, the race could set up perfectly now with an 8kg weight drop in what appears a thin Bel Esprit Stakes, with main market rival Recommendation having not won since August 2024.

Darren Gauci Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Caulfield Value Bet - Race 9 No. 7 Elouyou

Elouyou remains lightly raced for a rising seven-year-old and trainer Scott Cameron may have the gelding back on track.

The May 9 resumption suggested exactly that, with 1000m proving slightly too sharp despite the gelding still finishing off well.

He has always improved second-up, winning his past two attempts at this stage of a preparation, while the only defeat came via a narrow second placing.

The gelding produced a sharp ratings spike second-up last campaign when recording an arrogant victory at Moonee Valley before comfortably handling the rise to this grade and winning by even further next start in April.

His autumn lead-up work was encouraging and stepping to 1200m is ideal on Saturday for a tactically versatile galloper who handles all conditions.
