Rosehill Tips February 1
Race 1 - 12:30PM TAB Highway Plate Tips (1500m)
Best: 12. Rapbidash. She has a drought that stretches back to November, 2023 (won her first three starts), although Rapbidash has been competitive in stronger company via seven starts this campaign.
The market has respected her in a few of those metro events, which includes a third as a $7 chance in a BM78 at Rosehill in November and she was back to a midweek BM72 last start (winner has since taken out a BM88).
While Rapbidash wasn't disgraced at Randwick-Kensington on January 15, 1800m took some of her brilliance away and now suited back in distance, she's very well placed in a set weights Highway.
Value: 14. Himorher. The five-year-old was in need of the run fresh and with the rise to seven furlongs being in her favour second-up, Himorher recorded a strong last start victory at Dubbo.
This is a tougher ask for the Rodney Northam-trained galloper, however, being only third-up from a decent spell, there's improvement to come and she can handy enough from a good draw.
Himorher bolted in second-up last campaign prior to a runner-up finish behind Know Thyself, a progressive horse who won a Highway by a big space in June before placing at Group 3 level in Queensland.
Race 2 - 1:05PM Midway Handicap Tips (1350m)
Best: 9. Pocketing. A nomination has also been thrown in for a Warwick Farm event next Wednesday, so there may a query on whether the youngster runs here from a wide draw.
Even with map concerns, Pocketing is clearly the one to beat here, with the gelding yet to finish out of the top two from five starts (two wins) and he could've won fresh in November if there was any intent.
He atoned via a Kembla Grange BM64 before a runner-up finish at Canterbury, where the three-year-old was held-up at key stages and he also wasn't suited by that small, tight-turning track.
Value: 2. Noble Soldier. The jury was out on Noble Soldier early this prep, with three poor showings to open the campaign, but there have been more encouraging signs in his last two efforts.
Visors went on after his third-up Rosehill flop and that's provided the veteran with some spark, as he made inroads in a leader-dominated race for third when contesting a BM72 on January 1.
He was again unsuited by the race-shape via a fourth-of-nine finish last time out and along with measuring up in better races previously, the gelding is also a proven weight carrier in this grade.
Race 3 - 1:40PM Arrowfield Canonbury Stakes Tips (1100m)
Best: 3. Burma Star. It'll be interesting to see what the market does late, with J-Mac aboard the second fav (Tropic) and he was on Burma Star on debut last October (also piloted him in a January trial).
The Godolphin colt had his chance via a narrow first start defeat, although the form has stood up through Icarian Dream (winner) and he was a Brisbane Group 3 winner before contesting the Magic Millions.
After completing a nice, but quiet trial on January 3, he produced arguably his strongest piece of work to date at Hawkesbury and that 900m heat was comfortably the fastest on the January 20 set.
Value: 5. Melanite. John Thompson has prepared two juvenile winners this season and Bel Merci was the first of those, with that filly beating the subsequent Magic Millions winner at Group 3 level before a spell.
He's set Melanite a Group 3 assignment for his debut and while the two-year-old was a little green when narrowly defeated in a January 9 trial, he showed enough to warrant this placement.
That heat winner (Marhoona) lead throughout via a Randwick trial on Thursday, while Zac Lloyd sticks from the sole public outing and he combined with Thompson when taking out last Saturday's opener.
Race 4 - 2:15PM Widden Stakes Tips (1100m)
Best: 9. Snitzel Miss. I'm a little surprised that Tempted was scratched from the Chairman's Stakes at Sandown, as the early market elect has a wider draw in Sydney and this looks a stronger race.
James McDonald and Chris Waller team-up with Snitzel Miss, a filly who won her last Rosehill trial under a hold and that followed a quieter workout in her first public appearance.
She could've opened up a bigger margin via her January 23 heat win, where Within The Law (runner-up) was pushed out and that Bjorn Baker-trained filly won her first two starts in November/December.
Value: 2. In Limbo. While she couldn't land bets as a well backed fav on debut, In Limbo is open to natural improvement from that Gold Coast performance and a trip away often brings a young horse on.
The daughter of Hellbent was set a task over 1000m, as she was slow away early before pinching runs and after balancing up, she was good late without ever threatening the quinella.
In Limbo did show some tactical speed in two Rosehill trials before heading north, so she can settle closer in the run and the extra 100m will suit
Race 5 - 2:50PM Asahi Super Dry Handicap Tips (1200m)
Best: 1. Panic. He showed promise in two campaigns as a three-year-old, with the highlight coming at Listed level last autumn and Panic completed a winning hat-trick via that April 13 success.
Spelled after a Brisbane flop last May, the Michael Freedman-trained galloper was fair on return last August and he was then tipped out after failing second-up at Randwick.
Panic has completed two January trials (not far off a smart Joliestar in the latest) and with plenty of speed drawn to his outside, he'll do no work from an inside alley under Anna Roper, who takes 3kg off.
Value: 13. Stagnum. The Team Hawkes runner overcame trouble to record an impressive debut victory at Canterbury, where he settled last in a field of six before sustaining a long run.
While a seventh-of-nine finish doesn't read well, Stagnum still recorded the fastest last 200m of his start two assignment and that BM72 was dominated up front by a speedy Walkin'talkin'.
Dropping slightly in trip is an interesting move at this stage of the prep, however, he should have a strong up-front tempo to aim at and he also carries 1.5kg less from his January 17 event.
Race 6 - 3:25PM Ranvet Handicap Tips (2000m)
Best: 12. Piggyback. She has been costly for punters as a beaten fav in both starts his campaign. however, the four-year-old does appears suited stepping up in distance here.
Piggyback was left flatfooted when the sprint went on via her 1400m return of Warwick Farm and that was also the case second-up at Randwick, where she rallied late after looking well beaten
The daughter of Trapeze Artist saluted over this trip on testing ground last winter before an end-of-prep fourth at Flemington and a peak performance third-up on Saturday wouldn't shock.
Value: 3. Age Of Sail. The January 18 resumption was a fair one from Age Of Sail, where the son of Frankel was slightly inconvenienced and he's another in this field who is suited up in trip.
He didn't finish out of the money in his first five Australian appearances and after running into a subsequent Stakes winner fresh last prep, the gelding was unlucky when beaten in over this journey second-up.
Age Of Sail also found trouble following that when rising to 2400m at Rosehill and while he loses the claim second-up, he did carry big weights via his two Sydney placings last winter.
Race 7 - 4:00PM Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap Tips (1350m)
Best: 4. Promitto. A very open event starts Saturday's Rosehill Quaddie and despite being one of the outsiders in this line-up, I wouldn't be leaving Promitto out of the numbers.
He didn't quite deliver on the early promise, however, the David Atkins-trained galloper rediscovered winning touch at the back-end of his last campaign and his prior second to West Of Africa reads well.
1100m proved too slick via his last fresh assignment, but that Canterbury effort (in a much stronger race than this) was still okay and the recent lead-up work suggests that he's in for a good prep.
Value: 8. Mogwai. The Robert & Luke Price yard have this ex-Godolphin galloper ticking over nicely, with Mogwai saluting on stable debut for the new yard when leading throughout at Kembla Grange.
He defeated a subsequent metro winner (Tartana) in that fresh victory and when campaigning in this grade second-up, he wasn't far away over the Rosehill 1500m on January 18.
Ashley Morgan was able to negotiate a wide barrier in that last outing and he'll need to do that again aboard the son of Epaulette, who shouldn't be bothered by the drop in trip here.
Race 8 - 4:35PM Schweppes Southern Cross Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 5. Willaidow. Another even affair on Saturday's Sydney card is the Southern Cross Stakes and the resuming Willaidow should get every favour on the speed from barrier one.
The son of Shamus Award will be aiming at some black-type races now that his rating is over 90 and with a favourable map first-up, we should get a gauge on where he stands in this company.
Both January trials ahead of Saturday's return have been sharp and he was sent to the paddock in good form, with the six-year-old recording back-to-back wins earlier this season.
Value: 4. Wategos. 1200m gives Wategos a sniff first-up, with the son of Capitalist having resumed in a similar strength of race last prep, although he found 1100m too short there.
He's been a big improver over his last few campaigns, with a hat-trick recorded over the winter of 2023 and what he couldn't land a Listed blow in Brisbane, the gelding placed in all three Listed tilts.
A versatile galloper who handles all surfaces, Wategos is also effective over most distances up to a mile and he'll be strong at the end of the six furlongs if they go too hard up front.
Race 9 - 5:15PM Inglis Classic Yearling Sale 9-11 Feb Tips (1200m)
Best: 5. Overriding. The forgotten runner in the early market is this Nathan Doyle-trained mare, who has looked the part in her lead-up work and that includes a comfortable trial win on January 15.
Overriding is a very good fresh operator, with two wins and a third among her first-up stats, while her two times been out of the money fresh have both been strong performances.
She resumed with a slashing fifth-of-fifteen at Group 3 level last autumn behind a winner who took out a Group 1 at her next start, while a slow start was the difference via her August return early this season.
Value: 15. No Drama. This resuming five-year-old is still lightly raced and it's well worth noting that all five of his career victories have come when either first or second-up.
The last of his fresh triumphs came on stable debut for Matthew Dale last winter, where he carried a big weight over this distance and he followed that with a strong all-the-way success at Canterbury.
No Drama wasn't beaten far in the hat-trick bid in this grade to and it's always worth respecting the market with fresh runners from this yard (often produced with no public trials).
Race 10 - 5:55PM TAB Handicap Tips (1500m)
Best: 8. Yorkshire. I suspect that he's a better horse than Accredited, who just denied Yorkshire via his Randwick return tilt last month, where race fitness proved to be the difference.
That form has stood up superbly, with Accredited taking out a BM88 by a big space on January 4, whereas this four-year-old waited a week before bolting with a BM78 at Wyong second-up.
Yorkshire has already put together a very tidy record, with four wins and two placings from six appearances, and he'll be aimed at black-type races should he produce another strong performance on Saturday.
Value: 3. Bel Air. He's not the easiest to place, especially at this time of year as more progressive types down in the weights can be found, but he's generally thereabouts.
Connections had a shot at the stumps via the Magic Millions Cup and although he wouldn't have troubled the placegetters, Bel Air still got home well from a tricky spot (should've finished a little closer).
He would have had some residual fitness before going north, having campaigned until early November (saluted at Flemington before a short break) and he'll enjoy a soft run in transit here.
