Sandown Tips February 1
Race 1 - 12:15PM John Moule Handicap Tips (1200m)
Best: 7. New York Lustre. Scratched from a wide gate last Saturday, connections have been rewarded with a kinder draw in this 1200m sprint, although this is a stronger race.
The form around New York Lustre hasn't been fantastic, however, the mare has been running decent time and she's now down on the 54kg minimum for what is her toughest ask to date.
Jamie Melham has a few options here, as the five-year-old is capable of kicking up and leading, but she may look for a trail given there's a few speedsters drawn outside of her.
Value: 1. It's Business Time. An interesting runner resuming off a lengthy spell is this six-year-old, who was Group 3 placed behind a subsequent Group 1 winner when last in action.
1400m-1600m might be her preferred range, but her recent lead-up work has been encouraging and the sharpest showing was via her latest hit-out on January 20.
The Blake Shinn engagement is a positive for this Mark Walker-trained galloper and she recorded two big victories over this distance when early in her last campaign.
Race 2 - 12:45PM Henley Homes Handicap Tips (2400m)
Best: 1. Le Don De Vie. The Moonee Valley BM100 on December 28 is the key form reference for this affair, as five of the six acceptors are coming through that 2040m race.
Le Don De Vie was arguably the run of that event and he had blinkers applied for that last start attempt, where he was strong past the line after initially being outsprinted with 60kg.
He appeared to be ticking over well in a Cranbourne jump-out on January 20 and with 3.5kg less here over a more suitable journey, the veteran is as well placed as he'll ever be.
Value: 4. Mystery Island. Last year's Warrnambool Cup winner was more than six weeks between runs when contesting The Valley form race and he should've finished a touch closer there.
Mystery Island was held-up at a key stage and he appears to have come on from that December 28 outing, with the gelding winning a January 20 jump-out by a big space.
This small line-up might make this a tactical affair, which could play into his hands given he's likely to roll forward and off what was only a short spring prep, he can improve on Saturday.
Race 3 - 1:20PM Robert Hunter Handicap Tips (2400m)
Best: 1. Goldenstatewarrior. The last start winner is only fourth-up in his second Australian prep and vs many rivals who have found their level, Goldenstatewarrior could be the stayer with upside in this field.
Blinkers went on after a plain return and that gear changed brought about the desired effects, with the five-year-old making inroads in an on-speed dominated race second-up.
He showed further improvement when stepping up to 2400m at Geelong, where he carried a similar impost and while the gelding didn't beat much there, this is another weak race.
Value: 9. Pure Grunt. I've got some time for Pure Grunt, an honest four-year-old who didn't appear to handle Moonee Valley third-up, but he's otherwise been consistent.
Nothing went right in his latest tilt at Flemington, where he settled back and despite finding trouble in the run home, he recorded the fastest last 200m of that January 18 race.
Going from 1800m to 2400m isn't straightforward, but he's looking for further going off that latest effort and from a low draw over this longer trip, hopefully they're more positive early.
Race 4 - 1:55PM Ive > Handicap Tips (1400m)
Best: 5. Russian Meteor. A lot of these are hard to catch and that includes Russian Meteor, who can mix his form and winkers go on following a last start failure.
The five-year-old often produces his best when tracking a slower tempo and he wasn't afforded via fast-run race on January 11, but he was a winner in this grade when conditions suited four starts back.
He needs galloping room, so the wide alley is no negative for Saturday and while he's hard to trust, Russian Meteor is probably the most talented horse in this field.
Value: 8. Delta Sky. The daughter of Toronado has been in decent form, with a winning hat-trick recorded of following a fourth on return and there were excuses at Flemington last start.
Delta Sky wasn't able to get in via that January 11 attempt and as a result, she was forced to race three-wide and without cover, with the mare tiring late off a tough run.
A mile with no favours did see her out, so the drop back in distance here is a plus and that recent form has stood up with Smokin' Princess successful in a BM84 last Saturday.
Race 5 - 2:30PM Lamaro's Hotel Chairman's Stakes Tips (1000m)
Best: 9. Inkaruna. Anthony Freedman has prepared three of the last six Blue Diamond winners, which includes back-to-back victories in partnership with his son, Sam (Artorius - 2021 and Daumier - 2022).
Inkaruna looms as one their leading Blue Diamond contenders for this year, with the debutante gaining the services of an in-form Craig Williams for Saturday's feature assignment.
While her latest workout on January 25 was sound, she was sharper (without headgear) in her previous two and that includes an 800m Flemington heat in September before a spell.
Value: 7. No Limitation. She's open the national Improvement at start two off a debut attempt at Flemington and the filly appeared to be travelling well there before receiving a bump.
No Limitation is a typical jump-and-run juvenile from what we saw in her lead-up work at Mornington and she's one of only two runners in this Group 3 who has race experience.
She also got lost on the straight course via her first race day appearance and now from a low draw, the Clayton Douglas-trained youngster could surprise in her second attempt.
Race 6 - 3:05PM Quayclean Handicap Tips (1000m)
Best: 5. Winnasedge. This looks a nice fresh option for Winnasedge, a three-year-old who was consistent in five runs over his first campaign (never finished outside of the top four).
The two-time winner brought up the second of his victories in a BM64 before a third at stakes level and the runner-up from that Moonee Valley event bolted in with a Group 3 at his next start.
Winnasedge appeared to move well behind the speedy Buffalo River in an 800m Werribee jump-out on January 17 and behind a predicted fast tempo, he could have the last say.
Value: 7. Run Like Hell. She looked a different beast with blinkers on ahead of her Yarra Valley success, where the mare worked early to lead before opening up a decent margin.
While Run Like Hell disappointed following that, the rider reported that she may not have handled the shorter turnaround in that latest tilt and there's a bigger gap between runs here.
She's potentially one of early speed influences on what looks a fast tempo, however, Billy Egan has options from barrier one and he can use it if the inside/rails in on fire.
Race 7 - 3:40PM Mal Seccull Handicap Tips (1800m)
Best: 2. Emphasize. He's from the same family as Shadows In The Sun (2011 South Australian Derby winner) and while he's still in his first prep, there will be a view towards those three-year-old staying features.
A big, raw galloper from the Busuttin & Young stable, Emphasize was eye-catching on debut in a handy maiden before bolting in over 1717m, where the gelding sustained a wide run.
He did settle closer in that January 9 outing, so Craig Williams can make use of gate three early and while he's still learning the caper, Emphasize looks a progressive stayer with a future.
Value: 3. His Finest Hour. He didn't show a great deal in his lead-up work, but it's race day that matters and His Finest Hour produced on debut at Pakenham when saluting at 1600m.
The son of Proisir enjoyed a soft run in that January 15 attempts, but he still showed professionalism for a first starter and the quinella cleared out from the rest of the field.
That form has held-up, with the third and fourth placegetters both saluting at their next starts and So Brave backed up his breakthrough with a second in a BM64 here on Wednesday.
Race 8 - 4:15PM Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap Tips (1800m)
Best: 6. Revelare. Back up from last Saturday is Revelare and providing that he handles the short turnaround, the Robert Hickmott-trained galloper is well placed in his hat-trick bid.
He's technically up in grade to a BM78, however, the four-year-old held off the late challenge of Sir Atlas over a mile and that runner-up is as capable as anything here (was BM84 placed first-up).
Revelare is still putting it all together, with the son of So You Think set for just start six in his second campaign and he's bred to run a trip, so the extra furlong shouldn't worry him.
Value: 10. Et Tu Brute. There were excuses for his last start failure at Flemington, where the son of Dundeel pulled up lame and he was a well backed $5 chance for that January 18 event.
Blinkers go back on here and there wasn't much default with his prior efforts, which included a Bendigo triumph before placing in a BM70 over this distance on New Year's Day.
Et Tu Brute now finds himself on the 54kg minimum give it is a rise in class, but it's not a vintage affair and the gelding maps for an economical run under Declan Bates.
Race 9 - 4:55PM Lamaro's Hotel Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 8. Coeur Volante. As far as Group 1 ambitions go, this could be a make-or-break campaign for the resuming Coeur Volante and Blake Shinn has stuck with the four-year-old.
1600m may have seen her out in the Thousand Guineas as an early three-year-old, but she looked a potential start prior to that when recording a hat-trick (last two wins both at Group level).
She should've finished much closer in her Brisbane debut last winter and it was only a short Queensland prep, with Coeur Volante spelled after a somewhat plain run on June 15.
Value: 12. Cheval Chic. Race fitness over more proven rivals who are early in their work gives Cheval Chic a knockout hope in what is a strong Group 3 event for the mares.
She ran the fastest last 400m and 200m of both the Ballarat and Pakenham Cup meetings, while her fourth-of-eight finish third-up via the Group 3 Standish warrant this placement.
Now she's hard fit and without a whole lot of speed being on paper for this 1200m feature, I wouldn't be shocked if they bite the bullet early and look to push forward from a wide gate.
Race 10 - 5:35PM Sportsbet More Places Handicap Tips (1400m)
Best: 7. Lethal Thoughts. This Ciaron Maher-trained galloper is building towards a victory third-up, with Lethal Thoughts impressing in two January performances ahead of this BM84.
With a few more favours, he could have saluted first-up at Geelong, where the five-year-old was ridden ice cold before rattling off the race-fastest closing splits and he was laying in there.
Is It Me (winner) was peaking for his January 15 assignment and the victor blended in at the right time, but Lethal Thoughts was again strong late and he maps kinder here for a race that's no harder.
Value: 8. Watadeel. The January 11 resumption was effectively a non-event, as Watadeel was back and in traffic with a big weight via that Flemington straight-track dash.
He has saluted over 1200m, however, the gelding is more effective over more ground, with his last victory coming at a mile and he defeated a subsequent Group winner in that success.
Watadeel was sound in two December jump-out ahead of his recent summer return, with a heat win recorded on December 17 before placing behind a smart She's Bulletproof on December 24.
