Pinjarra Best Bet - Race 3 No. 3 Special Counsel

Spelled after being well held at Bunbury on debut in November, Special Counsel has improved sharply through his second campaign.

This preparation opened with an eye-catching runner-up finish at Pinjarra on April 8, where the gelding got home from off the speed and recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the program.

While visually not as prominent second-up as a drifting favourite, he again made ground from back of midfield when fourth on April 27.

Special Counsel recorded the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m sectionals of that card, where he was also working home against the pattern of the race.

William Pike comes off, although classy globetrotting hoop Manoel Nunes takes over and the rise to a mile appears ideal third-up.

Pinjarra Value Bet - Race 6 No. 10 God’s Grin

This resuming mare looks a big price for a galloper who has done little wrong through two previous preparations.

God’s Grin was competitive on debut for a sixth-of-12 finish in March last year and, in seven subsequent starts, the Pearce-trained four-year-old has not finished outside the placings.

The highlights of that campaign included back-to-back victories before a third-place finish in a Bunbury Class 5 over 1675m to end the preparation.

That prep also opened with a runner-up finish over 1100m when pushing handy sprinter Rolling Ruler, who has subsequently recorded two Saturday metropolitan victories at Ascot.

The 1200m should be fine as a starting point and the mare draws for a soft run under Brad Parnham.

Pinjarra Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Kervette

The main concern for Kervette is the weight, as the mare has often produced her best performances with lighter imposts.

Even after Chanel Cooper’s 2kg claim, she still carries a decent impost for this assignment.

A low barrier should allow Kervette an economical run in transit and Cooper was aboard for her back-to-back wins last winter when opening her account for the Dion Luciani stable.

The only poor run for the new yard came in a tired end-of-preparation effort before a spell, where the mare was heavily backed.

Her two performances this campaign have both been sound in much stronger company, including a first-up fifth in a 60+ event that has produced three subsequent winners, while she was set a task when well back on May 9.
