The seven-race Ipswich meeting, shifted from Wednesday to Thursday, showcases quality provincial talent. Horses with proven wet-track ability are tipped to excel under expected Heavy 10 conditions. Key selections include Empire Of Art (Race 2), Saxon Spirit (Race 5), Peccavi (Race 8), and roughie Under Arrest (Race 4). Many runners come with solid metropolitan and provincial form, making this a keenly contested card. The main recommendation is to follow those with a preference for wet tracks when placing your bets.

Ipswich Tips May 20

Great Northern Benchmark 60 Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Ipswich Best Bet - Race 2 No. 10 Empire Of Art

Chris Waller’s representative has shown up well in three previous starts at this venue, finishing runner-up on each occasion.

Two of those placings have come this preparation, including a narrow defeat over 1666m in a Class 1 handicap here in March.

The five-year-old has continued to perform consistently in all three subsequent starts, including a one-and-a-half length defeat in a 1950m Class 1 Plate at this circuit earlier this month.

Empire Of Art had previously finished just over one-and-a-half lengths away in fourth in a 2060m BM68 at Doomben.

That Doomben race has already produced three subsequent winners and the forecast Heavy 10 conditions are expected to suit.

Ipswich Roughie - Race 4 No. 9 Under Arrest

The New Zealand-bred produced three solid efforts during his first preparation, including a fourth-place finish over 1100m here on debut.

Racing on a wet track that day, the gelding was beaten just over six lengths in a nine-runner field.

Under Arrest then placed second at this venue before ending that campaign with a fourth over 1600m on the Sunshine Coast synthetic.

Both runs this campaign have come at Doomben, where the gelding finished seventh on each occasion after starting at big odds.

The return to Ipswich and softer conditions appeared to suit last week when Under Arrest finished third on a Soft 6 surface.

Ipswich Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 9 Saxon Spirit

Chris and Corey Munce’s filly produced two encouraging trial performances prior to her race debut.

The best of those came with a Doomben trial win over 840m in March.

Saxon Spirit then caught the eye on debut over 1110m at the same venue when beaten just over a length into fifth.

The rise in distance appeared to suit last time when the daughter of Saxon Warrior broke through over 1350m earlier this month.

Saxon Spirit carries a light weight again here and Tahlia Fenlon’s only ride on the card looks capable of going back-to-back.

Seven QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Ipswich Value Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Peccavi

The daughter of The Autumn Sun has shown a liking for rain-affected ground, with her two best performances coming on Soft tracks.

The first of those saw Peccavi score first-up over 1300m at Hawkesbury in March.

Two disappointing runs on Good ground at Newcastle followed before a return to softer conditions at Eagle Farm last time out.

The filly chased home an impressive winner there over 1400m on a Soft 6 surface earlier this month.

Ben Osmond’s claim is a positive and Peccavi appeals as a value chance stepping up in trip from barrier seven.
