Contested as the Kingston Town Classic from 2007 to 2021, the Northerly Stakes is the final Group 1 of the calendar year in Australia and Attrition (barrier 5) led an open early market for this feature.

The Group 1 Toorak Handicap victory in 2023 is starting to read superbly given the subsequent performances from Antino (runner-up) and the Queenland-based galloper is among the early market elects for the Hong Kong Mile on December 8.

Attrition has found his touch as this season has worn on, with the Mitchell Freedman-trained entire winning the Group 2 Hill Stakes at Rosehill after contesting a hot form race at Moonee Valley (Feehan Stakes) and he was unlucky following that when fourth-of-eleven in the Five Diamonds.

Three-year-old fillies have won four of the last nine editions of the Northerly Stakes, which bodes well for Storyville (barrier 1) who has been a big firmer in this Group 1 following her WA Guineas triumph on November 23.

Storyville carries just 50kg and William Pike has this key engagement, with 'The Wizard' searching for his third win in this Group 1 while the Grant & Alana Williams stable have prepared three of the last six Northerly Stakes winners.

The Williams yard have also accepted with Casino Seventeen (barrier 17) who recorded an upset win first-up in the Lee Steere Stakes before an eleven-of-sixteen finish in the Railway Stakes.

Ciaron Maher has dual representation via Light Infantry Man (barrier 15) and Socks Nation (barrier 8), with both runners coming through the Railway Stakes, while the Neasham & Archibald-trained Numerian (barrier 9) is no stranger to Perth, with the gelding saluting at Group 2 level here last December before a fourth-place finish in the Perth Cup.

Chris Waller is aiming for his second Northerly Stakes win, having prepared Moriarty in the 2014 edition and the champion trainer has Democracy Manifest (barrier 2) who placed over this trip in Sydney before a Railway Stakes miss.

Playing God recorded back-to-back wins in this feature (2010 and 2011) for Neville Parnham and he has accepted with Bustler (barrier 3) and Zipaway (barrier 4), who are both sons of Playing God.

While Parnham's contenders were well held last start in the Railway Stakes, both gallopers finished in the top four via the 2023 Northerly Stakes.

16 runners and two emergencies make up the final field for the 2024 Northerly Stakes.

Northerly Stakes Winners

A Group 1 that has had many name changes, it will be best known to punters as the Kingston Town Classic (2007-2021) before the recent change, which was named after nine-time Group 1 winner Northerly, who is arguably the best horse ever produced from Western Australia.

An 1800m event run under weight-for-age conditions, this race has launched the career of many great horses, while it has also seen many established and famous gallopers triumph, including champions in Kingston Town, Vo Rogue and Better Loosen Up.

Regal Power (2021), Amelia's Jewel (2022) and Dom To Shoot (2023) have won the last three editions of the Northerly Stakes.
