Imperatriz (barrier 3) is currently the premier sprinter in Australia following a terrific 2023, where the five-year-old won eight of nine starts in the calendar year, which included six victories at Group 1 level.
She was unbeaten from five attempts over the Melbourne Spring Carnival and after a string of performances at Moonee Valley, the daughter of I Am Invincible ticked the straight-track box when successful in the Champions Sprint.
Imperatriz arrives to the 2024 Newmarket Handicaps second-up following a return victory in the Black Caviar Lightning.
Espiona (barrier 8) caught the eye late when third behind Imperatriz and Private Eye in the Black Caviar Lightning, while the step to 1200m and a switch to handicap conditions are two big positives here.
The Chris Waller-trained mare has also won her last two second-up attempts.
Buenos Noches (barrier 9) has recorded two Group 1 placings up the Flemington straight, with the latest being a half-length second to Imperatriz over this track/trip in last year's Champions Sprint.
The four-year-old will be looking to atone following a forgivable return as an odds-on favourite in the Expressway Stakes.
Magic Time (barrier 12) is a talented four-year-old who rounded out her spring campaign with a win in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Three of her five wins have come over 1200m, although she hasn't contested a straight-course sprint, with her Flemington triumph coming over 1400m at start two.
Godolphin have won two of the last four Newmarket Handicap's and both have been with three-year-old's, which bodes well for four-time stakes winner Cylinder (barrier 13).
The negative for Cylinder is that his worst two performances have both been up the Flemington straight, which includes a sixth-place finish first-up via the Black Caviar Lightning.
Ciaron Maher has a strong hand, with Melbourne's leading trainer preparing Group 1 winners Bella Nipotina (barrier 4) and Ruthless Dame (barrier 2) for this famous sprint.
14 runners make up the final field for the 2024 Newmarket Handicap.

Newmarket Handicap Winners
Run under handicap conditions and contested up the Flemington straight over 1200m, the Newmarket Handicap is arguably Melbourne's most prestigious sprinting race.
While champions in Alinghi, Miss Andretti, Weekend Hussler and Black Caviar have saluted at short prices, this feature often lends itself to a long-priced winner, with Wanted ($13), Shamexpress ($15), The Quarterback ($21), Redkirk Warrior ($31), Sunlight ($13), Zoutori ($20) and Roch 'N' Horse ($101) among the recent winners of this event.
With eight wins, the legendary Bart Cummings is the most successful trainer in Newmarket Handicap history, while Damien Oliver leads the jockey tally with three victories.
Zoutori (2021), Roch 'N' Horse (2022) and In Secret (2023) have won the last three editions of the Newmarket Handicap.
