I Wish I Win (barrier 14) was eye-catching first-up in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) when coming from the rear and finishing second to Coolangatta in that February 18 feature.

While successful over the 1500m of The Golden Eagle last spring before being spelled, the Peter Moody-trained gelding has been set for a sprinting campaign this time in.

In Secret (barrier 8) was excellent in her only attempt over the 1200m at Flemington, recording a two-length victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes last spring.

She arrives off a similar lead-up, having been narrowly defeated over 1400m in Sydney in the Surround Stakes and that was also the case last prep when beaten by Jacquinot in the Golden Rose.

The Godolphin three-year-old will carry just 51.5kg in the 2023 Newmarket Handicap.

Private Eye (barrier 2) proved his elite sprinting credentials with a second in The Everest last spring and that followed a win over this track/trip via the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes.

This five-year-old arrives to this first-up tilt off three lead-up trials and will carry the topweight of 58kg.

Lofty Strike (barrier 12) is one of the most in-form sprinters in Mlbourne, with this superbly bred colt backing up a fresh in the Rubiton Stakes to finish second in the Oakleigh Plate.

Buenos Noches (barrier 9) is another three-year-old that's well respected in the Newmarket Handicap, especially with a 3kg turnaround on I Wish I Win from the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.

That fifth-place finish was his first time out of the top three at Flemington, which includes a listed win and the step to 1200m looks ideal ideal for the of Supido here.

Ciaron Maher & David Eaustace have dual representation via Bella Nipotina (barrier 1) and Swats That (barrier 5), while Peter & Paul Snowden travel south with Mazu (barrier 16), who is set to make his Melbourne debut here.

Last year's Newmarket Handicap and Champions Sprint winner Roch 'N' Horse (barrier 3) has also accepted.

16 runners make up the final field for the 2023 Newmarket Handicap.

Newmarket Handicap Winners

Contested under handicap conditions and run up the Flemington straight over 1200m, the Newmarket Handicap is arguably Melbourne's most prestigious sprinting race, with this Group 1 having been first run in 1874.

While superstars in Alinghi, Miss Andretti, Weekend Hussler and Black Caviar have been victorious at short quotes, the Newmarket often lends itself to a long-priced winner, with Wanted ($13), Shamexpress ($15), The Quarterback ($21), Redkirk Warrior ($31), Sunlight ($13), Zoutori ($20) and Roch 'N' Horse ($101) among the last 13 winners of this feature.

The legendary Bart Cummings has been the most successful trainer in the history of the Newmarket Handicap, preparing eight winners in total (1972, 1973, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1990, 1991), while with three wins (1992, 2001, 2005), champion hoop Damien Oliver leads the jockeys tally.

Bivouac (2020), Zoutori (2021) and Roch 'N' Horse (2022) have won the last three editions of the Newmarket Handicap.
