20 runners (plus one emergency) make up the final field for the 2024 Epsom Handicap, which headlines a bumper meeting from Royal Randwick on Saturday, October 5.

Royal Patronage (barrier 17) impressed on Australian debut when saluting in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes and then at WFA level in the 7 Stakes, there was merit to second-up performance when finishing third-of-eight over the Randwick Mile.

In a race won by Fangirl, the six-year-old was slow away early, while he is proven over the distance (last two overseas wins were in the 1600m-1700m range).

Ceolwulf (barrier 14) broke a 12-month winning drought second-up on August 31 before a runner-up finish behind Eliyas in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes and that winner is undefeated in Australia.

The Joe Pride-trained four-year-old is versatile, so dropping back to a mile from 2000m is no knock and he'll carry 54kg in the Epsom Handicap.

Tom Kitten (barrier 19) won first-up as a gelding before a fifth-place finish in the Bill Ritchie Handicap and he did stay at 1400m when five weeks between runs second-up.

Kovalica (barrier 1) finished third behind Royal Patronage on return and while he'll be suited out to 1600m second-up, the Chris Waller-trained gelding hasn't won since taking out the 2023 Queensland Derby.

Another leading chance from the Chris Waller yard is Democracy Manifest (barrier 10), who has been competitive in two Group 1 appearances over the Randwick mile, which includes a fifth-place finish in last year's Epsom Handicap.

Epsom Handicap Winners

The Epsom Handicap is one of Sydney's top spring races, with over 150 years of history and has been over the mile journey for the majority of its lifetime, despite a brief period of five years where the Epsom was run at 1800m.

Named in honour of the famous Epsom Downs racecourse in England, this mile feature has seen the best of the best taking out the prize including Super Impose, Sky High, Imposing, Winx, and Nightmarch.

Private Eye (2021), Ellsberg/Top Ranked (dead heat - 2022) and Rediener (2023) have won the last three editions of the Epsom Handicap.
