The 2025 CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield brings together a compact yet elite field, headlined by Angel Capital and Jimmysstar. While the group is small, the competition is set to be fierce with established and emerging talent on display. Angel Capital is favored due to his optimum distance performance and closing strength, but Jimmysstar, another top competitor, poses a significant threat. It’s an edition rich with intrigue rather than depth, bringing together proven spring performers, emerging types on the rise, and a few capable runners looking to make their mark at the elite level.
The tactical battle among the leading hopes should ensure a genuine contest between two proven topliners and a chasing pack ready to test them.
2025 CF Orr Stakes Tips
Only a small field lines up for the CF Orr Stakes, but it shapes as an intriguing clash between Jimmysstar and Angel Capital, while Evaporate also has some claims after a strong chasing third in The Golden Eagle.
Outside of Ka Ying Rising, both Jimmysstar and Angel Capital produced standout runs in The Everest. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper stuck on bravely after covering ground and atoned in style via the Russell Balding Stakes a fortnight ago.
Angel Capital wasn’t suited stepping from 1400m back to 1200m third-up in The Everest and was easily the best closer in that Sydney feature, clocking the fastest final 200m of the entire program.
It’s difficult to make a strong case for any of the four runners at double-figure odds, although Vinrock looks the most likely to give cheek up front with 53kg. He gets blinkers applied and has won a tick-over trial since an even effort in the Caulfield Guineas.
Bosustow is honest but likely outclassed by the top pair. A top three or four finish wouldn’t surprise, though. Pinstriped was a Group 1 WFA winner over this track-and-trip early last season when defeating Mr Brightside, Antino and Pride Of Jenni. Anything resembling that effort would have him in the mix, but the seven-year-old has been underwhelming this campaign.
The outsider of the 2025 CF Orr Stakes field is Mighty Ulysses, who hasn’t saluted since taking out the Group 3 Moonga Stakes on Caulfield Cup Day, 2024. He also boasts a win over Jimmysstar from his second Australian start, but that was 18 months ago when Jimmysstar was in the wilderness and this gelding is in poor form.
2025 CF Orr Stakes Best Bet - Angel Capital
Leaning the way of Angel Capital, but conceding Jimmysstar is a deserving favourite. This setup looks slightly more suitable for the Chris Waller-trained contender, now stepping back to seven furlongs and keeping his runs spaced.
His only defeat over the Caulfield 1400m came via a luckless Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes attempt second-up, and he was brilliant at The Valley prior. The return to this distance profile looks ideal, and his recent sectionals suggest he’s peaking at the right time.
Connections will be eager to add a Group 1 victory to his record, and this race has a sense of timing about it. With fitness and pattern on his side, Angel Capital looks primed to strike.
The key may come down to whether he can find clear air to launch while keeping Jimmysstar, drawn inside him, in restricted room. With the right run, he has the closing burst to finish over the top late.
