The CF Orr Stakes, a prestigious 1400m race historically launching Australia's racing calendar, is set for an exciting shift to mid-November starting 2025. Favorite Jimmysstar, trained by Ciaron Maher, leads the betting odds. The race has been a stage for both sprinters and stayers, featuring renowned past winners. The move to a new date concludes the Melbourne spring season's Group 1 action. Other contenders include Angel Capital and Evaporate. This change marks a significant scheduling update for the Australian racing circuit.

The Group 1 CF Orr Stakes will be contested for the second time in 2025 on Saturday, November 15, with this 1400m WFA feature set to debut in its new mid-November slot after traditionally being the first Group 1 for the calendar year in Australia.

Ciaron Maher, who prepared Another Wil to win this race in February, also trains Jimmysstar — the $2.30 favourite with Betr.

He had been building well in Sydney and, after an unlucky third-up attempt in The Everest, the six-year-old recorded a much-deserved last-start victory over 1300m in the Russell Balding Stakes.

Stepping to 1400m holds no fears, having taken out the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over this distance back in April, while he also has a strong record at Caulfield with two wins over this track-and-trip.

Coming back to 1200m didn’t suit Angel Capital ($2.80) in The Everest, where the entire was doing his best work late. That followed a luckless Group 1 attempt over the Caulfield 1400m when beaten as favourite.

The four-year-old was excellent prior to that when bolting in on stable debut for Chris Waller, and he has won two of three starts over this track-and-trip.

Evaporate ($5) had excuses when resuming in the PB Lawrence Stakes, and after a freshen-up from that August 16 outing, he’s been in good touch across three subsequent appearances.

After winning the Group 3 Sandown Stakes over Transatlantic, that in-form rival turned the tables with a narrow Toorak Handicap victory, while Evaporate was last seen making ground for third in The Golden Eagle.

CF Orr Stakes Winners

The C.F. Orr Stakes was traditionally the first Group 1 of the Australian racing calendar, a 1400m weight-for-age event run at Caulfield. From November 2025, it will now conclude Group 1 action for the Melbourne spring and be contested one week after Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

It was historically a race for stayers to launch their autumn campaigns, with past winners such as Talaq, Let’s Elope, Jeune and Saintly featuring on the honour roll. However, in more recent years, the race has largely been dominated by sprinter-milers.

The C.F. Orr Stakes gained Group 1 status in 1993, although many famous winners preceded that upgrade, with Flight, Tobin Bronze, Manikato and Vo Rogue among the champions to have taken out the feature.

Jacquinot (2023), Mr Brightside (2024) and Another Wil (2025) have won the past three editions of the C.F. Orr Stakes.
