Second seed Coco Gauff continues her pursuit of a second Cincinnati Open title when she meets Lucia Bronzetti in the R16 on Thursday.

It's been rocks or diamonds for Gauff in Cincinnati throughout her career - she won the title in 2023, but hadn't been past the second round in her other four main draw appearances. The American benefitted from a walkover from Dayana Yastremska (who beat her at Wimbledon) in the previous round, so she's still only won a total of three matches since lifting her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June.

Meanwhile, Bronzetti has reached just her second ever WTA 1000 R16 after advancing to this stage in her first ever appearance at this level in Miami 2022. The Italian has notched up some impressive victories this week over the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko, so she has nothing to lose and can swing freely against Gauff, who has been struggling considerably on her serve (she leads the tour for most double faults in 2025). Bronzetti has covered a big +6.5 line in her two previous meetings with Gauff and can do so again in Cincinnati.

Gauff leads 2-0, winning 6-4 6-4 on the clay of Saint-Gaudenst in 2019 before a 6-2 7-6 victory in the third round of Indian Wells 2024.

Gauff comes into this encounter with a 34-11 record on the season, picking up her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and rising to No. 2 in the world.

However, 18 of those wins came during the clay swing, where Gauff made the final of both Madrid and Rome before going all the way in Paris.

That six-week period has saved Gauff's season - she's gone 3-3 since Roland Garros, losing in the opening round of Wimbledon and going down in the quarter-finals of Montreal last week to rising star Victoria Mboko.

The 21-year-old hit 42 double faults in her three Montreal matches and still appeared shaky during her Cincinnati opener, where she defeated Wang Xinyu 6-3 6-2. Gauff probably would have preferred more match practice instead of Yastremska handing her a walkover in the third round.

Bronzetti heads into this contest with a negative 18-20 record for the season, but playing some of her best tennis of 2025 right now in Cincinnati.

The Italian had a decent start to the season, finishing runner-up at the WTA 250 event in Cluj and reaching the third round of Indian Wells, where she ran into World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

The 26-year-old struggled over the last few months, but is back playing some good tennis on her preferred surface of hardcourt.

Indeed, Bronzetti has won her three Cincinnati matches this tournament in a deciding set, edging out Lin Zhu in her opening match before taking top 30 scalps over Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko.
