You've got to wonder how seriously both of these players are taking this tournament, a week ahead of Roland Garros. Obviously Shelton wants to get more matches under his belt after opening defeats in Madrid and Rome, but the focus remains on next week. Giron meanwhile was beaten in the final round of qualifying by the World No. 472 before gaining entry in the main draw as a lucky loser.

I'm going to stay clear of predicting a H2H winner here, but as always, love the tiebreak value in Shelton matches. The big-serving lefty has seen 1+ tiebreak in nine of his last 12 matches and in all four of his opening round clay matches in 2026 - it often takes Shelton a while to get going and sink his teeth into tournaments/matches. Giron has also seen a fair share of tiebreaks lately and the pair played two in their most-recent meeting.

It was a strong start to the season for Shelton as he made another Australian Open quarter-final before collecting the ATP 500 title in Dallas.

Illness and injury contributed to a quiet Sunshine Swing, with Shelton winning just one match across Indian Wells and Miami before another early loss in Houston.

Shelton bounced back nicely to win his second ATP 500 title of the year on the clay of Munich, defeating Joao Fonseca and Flavio Cobolli along the way.

However, Shelton couldn't build on that triumph and lost his opening match at both Madrid and Rome to Dino Prizmic and Nikoloz Basilashvili respectively.

The American is making his debut appearance in Hamburg and will be looking to extend his perfect record in ATP 500 matches this year.

It hasn't been a great season for Giron and his ranking has taken a tumble, coming into this clash down at No. 77 in the world.

Giron had a nice start to the year with back-to-back semi-finals in Hong Kong and Auckland - however, that's the last time he's won consecutive tour-level matches.

The 32-year-old launched his European clay swing with an opening round loss in Madrid to Yannick Hanfmann, which prompted a drop down to Challenger level, where he made the quarter-finals in Cagliari.

Giron couldn't build on that result as he went down in straight sets in his Rome opener to veteran Marin Cilic.
