Caulfield Heath Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 3 Mr Independent

Mr Independent is progressing nicely, with the Julius Sandhu-trained galloper recording a deserved breakthrough at Pakenham on February 19.

While it was only a narrow victory, he did well to reel in Butterscotch, who led and gave good kicks, and the step up to 1800m fourth-up suits after staying at 1600m last time.

He shapes as the progressive three-year-old in this field against more exposed older rivals.

Prior to that win, he fought well when runner-up to Kaye Jay, who was subsequently competitive when finishing fourth at Group 2 level on February 21.

He resumed with a fifth-of-10 at Pakenham when unsuited over 1400m, having also shown promise on debut over an unsuitable short trip earlier in the season.

Caulfield Heath Best Bet - Race 6 No. 8 Eternal

Eternal finds a very suitable first-up assignment on Wednesday, with the Chris Waller-trained mare impressing in the second of her summer lead-ups on the Caulfield Heath circuit on February 25.

She brings an almost perfect fresh record, highlighted by two strong first-up victories.

The latest came earlier this season when she produced the fastest final 400m and 200m splits of the August 17 Sale program, and she had excuses at Sandown following that performance.

Her only first-up defeat came when Island Dec produced an exceptional performance in February last year, with Eternal starting favourite in that Canterbury BM64.

With in-form Ben Mallum engaged and barrier four at his disposal, the daughter of Epaulette looks ideally placed to strike fresh.

While drawn wide, Marilyn's Edge has the tactical speed to overcome the barrier and has looked sharp in two Cranbourne jump-outs leading into this return.

Early in the preparation may be the right time to catch her, with both career victories coming either first or second-up.

The latest of those wins came at Kilmore on September 29, following a narrow fresh defeat when sent out an odds-on favourite.

Although that campaign tapered off, she was well supported on multiple occasions, including for a track-and-trip sprint at Caulfield Heath in November.

This does not look an overly strong contest and, with the four-year-old likely to make her own luck on the speed, she is a genuine each-way chance in the penultimate.

Remembering Miss Finland Tips (Race 8)

Caulfield Heath Value Bet - Race 8 No. 8 Jennyanydots

A slow beginning was out of character for Jennyanydots when resuming at Cranbourne on January 30, and while it proved costly, she was strong late when charging home for third.

She recorded the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m of the program.

The daughter of Magnus arrived at that first-up run off two January jump-out wins and had already proven herself a city-winning sprinter over 1000m earlier in the season.

That preparation concluded with a competitive fourth-place finish up the Flemington straight in September.

With a cleaner getaway from an inside draw, she can settle closer to the speed and looks capable of featuring in Wednesday’s finale.
