Launceston Tips March 4

Ladbrokes Big Bets Copy Now Maiden Tips (Race 2)

Launceston Value Bet - Race 2 No. 11 Una Paloma Blanca

The daughter of Stratosphere recorded solid efforts on the synthetic track at Devonport in her first two starts.

The second of those outings saw her beaten just over a length into third over 1150m when racing first-up this prep.

She has been allocated wide barriers in both turf runs since, including when finishing fifth from barrier 10 at Hobart last time out.

Racing on a Soft 5 surface, the mare was widest of all turning for home and was beaten less than two lengths.

John Blacker’s representative proved she handled wet ground, and with Lauryn Bingley — who has ridden her in two of her past three starts — retaining the mount and a kinder draw this time, she can surprise at odds.

Launceston Favourite - Race 4 No. 6 Artillery Fire

The four-year-old is a proven wet-track performer, having broken through for his maiden win on a Soft 6 surface here earlier in the season.

He scored by a length over 1200m that day before finishing third in a similar event at Hobart at his final start last prep.

The gelding has shown improvement with racing this campaign, including a solid fourth on a wet track at Hobart on his penultimate start.

That effort saw him beaten just under two and a half lengths in an 1100m Class 1 handicap.

He took another step forward when beaten half a length over 1200m here from a wide barrier, and with Sigrid Carr’s mount well placed under Jabez Johnstone, he looks capable of going one better.

Launceston Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Mastretta

Monica Ryan’s representative has recorded top-three finishes in two of three starts this prep, including a third on Devonport’s synthetic surface when resuming.

The four-year-old was beaten just under five lengths in a Class 4 handicap on that occasion before returning to turf at Hobart.

Racing over 1200m, the daughter of Grunt finished fourth of five on a Soft 5 surface when beaten just over six and a half lengths.

A trial at Longford followed before she returned to racing in an 1100m Class 4 set-weights event at Hobart last month, where she was beaten half a length.

She is a proven performer at this venue with four wins to her name, and with the step up in distance and return to soft ground in her favour, she looks well placed to strike.

Launceston Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 3 The Trine

The gelding has shown a liking for this venue, finishing in the top three at three of his four appearances here.

The exception came when finishing fifth in a 1400m Open Handicap on a Good 4 surface last time out.

He is better judged on earlier form this prep, which includes three wins, highlighted by a soft-ground maiden victory here at the end of October.

While that success came over 1100m, his two subsequent wins were both over 1400m, including an impressive Class 4 set-weights victory three starts back.

The form from that race has worked out strongly, and with Craig Newitt aboard and a return to wet ground, he looks capable of finishing the night on a winning note.
