Pakenham Tips May 29
Best Bet
Race 5 No. 7 Mahers Landing
The New Zealand-bred broke through for his first win when saluting by a narrow margin in a 1547m maiden at Geelong at the start of October.
The three-year-old overcame a wide barrier to score on that occasion before being tested at metro level in a Benchmark 70 handicap at Caulfield.
Mahers Landing finished fourth in a six-runner event there and, after a spell, has recorded top-four finishes in three of four starts this preparation.
The exception came first-up at this circuit, while his best effort this campaign was a close second over 1600m at Cranbourne on his penultimate appearance.
He stepped to this distance for the first time when beaten just over a length into fourth in a stronger race here two weeks ago, while Aristonous has since boosted the form at Benchmark 74 level and Jabez Johnstone’s 2kg claim is another positive.
Value Bet
Race 8 No. 3 Blue Bandit
Trainer John Leek Jr’s horses have been running well in May, with three of his five runners finishing in the first two.
One of the exceptions came when Blue Bandit finished sixth in a 14-runner race at Warrnambool last start.
The son of Blue Point was beaten seven-and-a-half lengths over 1300m on a Heavy 10 surface there after contesting all four previous runs this campaign at Pakenham.
Those appearances included a second-up victory at the track before the gelding placed third over this distance on his penultimate start.
That placing came on a Heavy 8 surface, while both career wins have come on Soft 7 ground and the inside draw looks another positive for the four-year-old on Friday night.
Market Mover
A half-brother to Group 2 winner Bellatrix Star, there has been market support for Opunake ahead of his racecourse debut in Race 2.
The Mark Walker-trained gelding impressed with a jump-out victory over 1000m at Caulfield Heath prior to this assignment.
Thomas Stockdale takes the ride on Friday night aboard the two-year-old, who is currently available at $9.50 with Unibet Australia.
Stats Say
Trainer Clinton McDonald boasts a 44.4% strike-rate from nine runners at Pakenham this season.
Flying Mean is the stable’s sole representative on Friday night’s program and previously broke his maiden at this venue over 1200m in March last year.
Blinkers return after the gelding resumed from more than 12 months off the scene with a seventh at Sale and he should strip fitter second-up from an inside alley.
