The 2022 Melbourne Cup is a Group One two mile handicap held at Flemington, known as the race that stops the nation.

Deauville Legend (barrier nine) has been the favourite for this race since August, and has done nothing but shortened in betting since then. His last win was over El Bodegon who has subsequently placed a neck behind Anamoe in the Cox Plate.

Without A Fight (barrier 18) will be hoping the rain arrives to bring him right into this race, but his form also stacks up quite strong.

Hoo Ya Mal (barrier 15) is another import now in the care of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott with form around the favourite, while stablemate Knight's Order (barrier 24) looks the likely leader of the event.

Montefilia (barrier 11) closed off well in the Caulfield Cup and has to be considered a chance at a double figure price, while Gold Trip (barrier 14) runs in his third major this spring and looks for his first win in Australia.

Melbourne Cup Winners

The Melbourne Cup is one of the world’s most famous races.

First run 1861, the past winners become part of racing folklore the very second after passing the post in front.

The race started very differently to how it is today.

17 horses contested the first Melbourne Cup under a winner take all system. Archer was the first Melbourne Cup winner. The race routinely grinds Australia to a halt with the hardcore punters and the casuals uniting for one day a year to have a flutter on the race that stops a nation.

Makybe Diva is arguably one of the most famous Melbourne Cup competitors after taking the race out on three consecutive ocassions, but the most notable name to win the race is without question Phar Lap, who won the 1930 Melbourne Cup.

These days the race is arguably the world’s most coveted race. Horses target this race from right around the globe and it can take years to get a horse ready for the race that stops a nation.
