Sunshine Coast Favourite - Race 2 No. 14 Penrod

David Vandyke’s colt failed to make an impact in two starts last season, including when beating just one rival home over 1200m at the Gold Coast in March.

He was spelled following that effort, having been beaten more than fifteen lengths, and has returned in better order this preparation.

The son of Better Than Ready showed promise at the trials prior to resuming with a midfield finish over this track and trip at the end of last month.

He then improved sharply when racing on the speed and finishing third over the same course and distance two weeks ago.

Third-up and drawn to get every chance, Penrod looks ready to go one better.

Gordon’s Benchmark 65 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Sunshine Coast Best Bet - Race 5 No. 5 Luton Hoo

The New Zealand-bred mare produced a couple of solid efforts in defeat last campaign, including a fourth over 1600m at Gatton in June.

She followed that with a narrow second over 1800m in a Benchmark 65 at the Gold Coast the following month, finishing just a length from the winner.

Spelled after one more run, the five-year-old has trialled well ahead of her return, finishing runner-up in a 1000m heat on the inner track here earlier this month.

The daughter of Time Test is a previous winner at this circuit, having taken out a Benchmark 58 over 1600m last September.

Drawn well and proven fresh, she looks well placed to make a strong return with Ben Thompson engaged.

Rick’s Class 1 Plate Tips (Race 6)

Sunshine Coast Value Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Brooklyn Daisy

The consistent four-year-old has finished in the top three at all three starts this preparation, including a last-start second in a 1300m Benchmark 62 here last weekend.

That came after a solid third at Toowoomba in a Class 3 earlier in the campaign, with that form stacking up strongly through subsequent winner Purezza.

Mark Currie’s mare continues to hold her form well and gets the addition of a cross-over nose band and winkers for the first time.

She’s shown versatility in her racing pattern and looks ready to convert her consistent form into another victory.

With Daniel Moor retaining the ride, Brooklyn Daisy represents genuine value in this line-up.

Sunshine Coast Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 2 Scoundrel

The four-year-old has improved with each run this preparation following a plain first-up effort at the Gold Coast last month.

He’s since produced back-to-back fourths in Brisbane, the first over 1600m at Eagle Farm where he made good ground from a wide draw, before another honest run at Doomben over 1640m.

Those efforts have him nicely tuned for this drop back to provincial company, and the step back in grade should suit.

Kyle Wilson-Taylor reunites and is expected to have him in a prominent spot throughout from a favourable barrier.

A consistent type who’s knocking on the door, Scoundrel looks ready to break through for the Jay Bellamy stable.
