Stefanos Tsitsipas remains well below his best, but this is a good opportunity for the former World No. 3 to build some momentum in Cincinnati, with the Greek tipped to advance into the second round in straight sets on Friday.

Tsitsipas is a former Cincinnati Masters runner-up and two-time semi-finalist and he will be hoping to recapture some of his best form in his opening round here. It's obviously been a tough last few years on tour for the Greek, but this is a match he should be winning in fairly routine fashion.

Royer just hasn't been able to establish himself as a genuine top 100 player, although he remains ranked No. 78 in the world. The Frenchman is a shocking 3-16 on the year at tour-level and has gone 0-9 against players inside the top 60. Clearly not at the required level at the moment to compete in big Masters events.

So while I'm a little hesitant to tip a straightforward Tsitsipas victory, there really isn't anything to justify Royer being able to make this match competitive. Tsitsipas has improved ever so slightly over the last month or so and has been winning his opening round matches more often than not lately. He should prove too strong in Cincy.

Tsitsipas has climbed back towards the top 50, but he remains well below the standard that once saw him rise to World No. 3 and contend for Grand Slam and Masters 1000 titles.

Although there have been some positive signs, the Greek is still searching for the consistency that defined his peak years. He did gain a welcome confidence boost by lifting the Gstaad title a few weeks ago, but that triumph came on clay against a relatively weakened field following Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old was unable to build on that momentum in Washington, where his campaign ended in the opening round with a three-set defeat to Alex de Minaur, while after qualifying and winning his opening round in Canada against Martin Damm last week, Tsitsipas went down in the second round to Joao Fonseca in three sets.

Tsitsipas' best result in Cincinnati was a runner-up showing in 2022, where he beat then No. 1 Daniil Medvedev before falling to Borna Coric in the final.

Royer enjoyed a great end to last season, propelling himself into the world's top 100.

However, the 25-year-old hasn't been able to get any sort of momentum going at tour-level in 2026, winning just three matches.

With lots of points to defend over the next few months, Royer will likely tumble back out of the top 100 if he doesn't find some better tennis soon.

Royer is yet to beat a top 60 player this season, but it has taken the very best to beat him at the slams, going down to Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros and Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon.

The Frenchman managed to beat Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of Montreal last week before going down in straight sets to Tommy Paul.
