He had shown potential at the jump-outs and should only benefit from his first race-day outing over winter, where a lack of experience proved the difference.

The Phillip Stokes-trained youngster was slow to begin, while the more seasoned Shining Smile landed on the speed and recorded a fifth career win in what was a handy affair.

He’s been given time since and, while his October 7 jump-out looked a touch plain, that could be deceptive given how well the stable is going.

Phillip Stokes has prepared 25 winners at a 25% strike rate since the start of September, and Bold Secret fits the profile of another improver.

With natural progress and a cleaner start, he can take the next step here, but the market could tell the story.

Moonee Valley Best Bet - Race 5 No. 11 Fieldelo

These 955m dashes can be tricky, but happy to trust the placement with Fieldelo, who looks to have a genuine class edge on this BM74 lineup.

Most of her exposed rivals appear to have reached their ceiling, whereas she may have the scope to measure up in better company through the spring.

Both wins last season came fresh — including a seven-length romp at Bendigo — and Fieldelo was narrowly rolled in a Listed race before heading for a spell.

She’s completed two August jump-outs and moved beautifully when winning the latest, suggesting she’s ready to fire first-up again.

Fieldelo could simply be too good for this lot.

Mittys VOBIS Gold Star Tips (Race 6)

Moonee Valley Next Best - Race 6 No. 2 Apulia

Early market support has come for Apulia, who returns after almost a year off but looks forward enough for this $200,000 VOBIS assignment.

He’s had three spring hit-outs to prepare and has been given solid workouts to win his last two, indicating there’s genuine intent in this fresh assignment.

We were with him in this race last year, where he should’ve won, and it’s no surprise to see the Hayes yard attack this event first-up again.

Although he looked a staying type early on, the son of Fiorente has come to hand quickly in previous preps and handles this distance range.

It’s a very winnable race, and Apulia is capable of striking first-up.

Ladbrokes Moonee Valley Gold Cup Tips (Race 7)

Moonee Valley Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Smokin’ Romans

This veteran is ticking over fairly well and looks ready to hit peak fitness after four runs this campaign.

He comes off a staying hit-out over 2400m, having risen from 1800m, and now steps to 2500m at Moonee Valley, where he’s unbeaten from two attempts.

Drawn in gate 10, he should roll forward and could easily lead under Ben Melham, who has a decent rapport with Smokin’ Romans building and was aboard for the Warrnambool Cup success in May.

That victory came at the same stage of his prep — fifth-up — and showed he thrives with racing.

Smokin’ Romans is hard-fit, maps to take control, and can give a great sight at an each-way price.

Treasury Collective Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Moonee Valley Value Bet - Race 8 No. 7 Opening Address

He looked to have every chance first-up at Seymour but peaked late carrying 62kg, which was understandable given he was entitled to need the run.

A Listed winner on Melbourne Cup Day last year, the son of the late So You Think — who we sadly lost this week — has a strong second-up record.

He was a dominant winner at the same stage of his first campaign and wasn’t disgraced in the Group 1 Australian Guineas last prep.

Now fitter, back to 1600m and carrying 4kg less, he looks much better placed on Friday night.

Open race, but Opening Address has claims at a double-figure quote.
