Race 1 - 12:10PM The Valley @ Sandown Handicap Tips (1500m)
Blake Shinn has a good book of rides on Saturday's Moir Stakes program, including the favourite in the opener, 3. Cignetti. The son of Super Seth looks to have returned stronger in his second campaign, justifying an odds-on quote when resuming at Sale on August 21.
The three-year-old absorbed pressure on speed before kicking away late, with a good margin to second and even bigger gaps to the rest. That race rated okay against a strong BM62 over the same distance later in the program, while the maiden victory also came on rain-affected ground.
From barrier two, Shinn could well dictate up front aboard the Busuttin and Young-trained galloper.
4. Lepolo was a comfortable debut winner, although that synthetic form is hard to gauge now coming to turf. His wet-track trials and jump-outs either side were only fair, but it was a strong debut win all the same and the extra 100m shouldn't trouble him.
Another synthetic debut winner was 5. Utopic Future, with the Ciaron Maher-trained colt getting the job done on August 10. There was more merit to the narrow margin than it suggests after working early. 2. Hydrobomb could be the big improver second-up with blinkers on after being well beaten fresh when back and chasing. He was a Lakeside winner in March and narrowly beaten on the Hillside circuit on debut.
Selections: 3-4-5-2.
Race 2 - 12:40PM Ladbrokes Popular SRM Handicap Tips (1600m)
Pound for pound, Gavin Bedggood is one of the better trainers in the business, and he's coming off a strong August with 11 winners for the month at a 34% strike-rate.
5. Ocean Bay is up in grade on a shorter turnaround from the August 28 meeting at Geelong, but I suspect Bedggood is chasing wet tracks with the ex-Kiwi. If the rain does come, bring the four-year-old further into calculations for Saturday's hat-trick bid.
It was a brave Class 1 triumph at Bendigo on July 30 before a month between runs, then she chased hard to roll Stay Humble at Geelong. That form ties in okay through Celestial Zara, one of the early market elects here. Open affair, but Ocean Bay is going well and an each-way quote is available.
The best turn-of-foot in the race may belong to 4. Illyivy. The query is stretching that brilliance to a mile for the first time, but she has a decent winter platform underneath her and recorded the second-fastest closing sectionals in each of her past two starts. She needs luck in running but remains lightly raced and dangerous if the gaps come.
6. Blue Willow has been up a while, but the back-up is worthwhile after being held up in last Saturday's BM78 at Caulfield. Her previous start produced a deserved track-and-trip victory. 3. Jenni Gone Bonkers gets to a mile for the first time this winter and has a win and a third from two previous attempts at the distance. She maps for a softer run after covering ground in two of her three starts this campaign.
Selections: 5-4-6-3.
Race 3 - 1:15PM EDSA Group Handicap Tips (1000m)
Following a debut victory at Ballarat early last season, things didn't quite pan out for 8. Tres Magnifique when stepped up in grade through spring. She found traffic at key stages in both her Caulfield and Moonee Valley appearances before rounding out the preparation when well beaten at Group 3 level up the Flemington straight.
She was brought back through the grades in her second campaign, putting together a hat-trick over March and April. It's worth noting Craig Williams reported after her May 30 failure that she didn't get through the Heavy 8, although that also came at the end of a preparation with a month between runs.
Tres Magnifique has since bolted in with two Cranbourne trials during August, both on testing ground. She's not alone for early speed, and Williams may be happy to let Beast Mode and Mainmankash go forward.
3. Thanks Gorgeous has only finished outside the money once in five attempts on rain-affected ground, while her only previous look at a Heavy track resulted in a Listed victory over Tycoon Star, who was a Group 2 winner at his next start before producing a competitive Group 1 effort.
4. Behaviour has raced consistently throughout winter and brought up a Caulfield Heath victory over a handy High On The Hill two starts back. He needs luck from the inside draw given his pattern but should be thereabouts if it comes. 6. Mainmankash is all speed and ideally suited to these 1000m dashes.
Selections: 8-3-4-6.
Race 4 - 1:50PM Drummond Golf Handicap Tips (1300m)
15. Savoyard created an immediate impression on debut in January, coming from back in the field to record a stylish victory in a Future Stars heat at a big price. He then narrowly went down when freshened for the $250,000 final before being spelled.
The August 15 return at Caulfield over 1100m can almost be treated as another barrier trial. The Cliff Brown-trained galloper was allowed to find his feet at the rear and, while never in winning contention, was hard to miss late, recording the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m of the meeting.
The extra furlong and switch to the bigger Sandown Hillside circuit look ideal second-up. Michael Dee gets back aboard after riding Savoyard in his debut victory, while the gelding also carries 3.5kg less than his two main threats.
3. Cruiserweight heads the betting. He was unbeaten before being ridden warm as an odds-on favourite when attempting the four-peat on July 25. Things haven't gone his way since, being scratched at the barriers at Sandown before failing to gain a start as third emergency at Caulfield last week.
4. Fundamental Nature took out the BM74 Savoyard contested at Caulfield on August 15 and hasn't done much wrong aside from a tired effort at the end of the first preparation. This is the first step beyond 1200m. 13. Untapped is the blowout option after winning first-up on Heavy ground before having excuses subsequently. She carries 2kg less from her last run and maps for more favours from a kinder draw.
Selections: 15-3-4-13.
Race 5 - 2:25PM MSC Signs Atlantic Jewel Stakes Tips (1300m)
These early-season fillies' features are always a good guide going forward, and there are a few at each-way odds making some appeal in an open Atlantic Jewel Stakes.
One at a massive quote is 9. Almost An Angel. The Robbie Griffiths-trained filly was never a winning chance in the Quezette Stakes, which was dominated by Natural Fling, but produced the fastest final 200m after being shuffled back and held up in an impossible position.
There was promise throughout her juvenile campaign, which culminated in a Listed placing during the Adelaide carnival. Getting to the longer trip from a soft draw looks suitable, but she needs a more positive ride early. Luke Nolen jumps aboard.
Another at double-figure odds is 11. La Barrita, who resumes for Tony and Calvin McEvoy. She went north with wraps on her during her first campaign, which included an unlucky Warwick Farm debut before heading to Brisbane. She should have come on with that preparation and travel under her belt, while winkers go on after she moved well in an August 19 Caulfield jump-out.
It will be interesting to see how 4. Pretty Baby measures up in Melbourne after arriving off a winning hat-trick in Adelaide, all on rain-affected tracks. It's somewhat of a D-day for 6. Ghana's Akan with a few winter runs. There were excuses fresh when covering ground, but she had her chance last time. She did launch late third-up last preparation when second to subsequent Group 1 winner Fireball.
Selections: 9-11-4-6.
Race 6 - 3:00PM McMahon's Dairy McKenzie Stakes Tips (1300m)
After opening his career with back-to-back victories, including a two-length Listed triumph in the Anzac Day Stakes at Flemington, connections headed north with 3. Blind Raise before pulling up stumps after his disappointing Group 2 effort.
There were excuses post-race with a slow recovery and nasal discharge, and the Busuttin and Young-trained gelding has since had time to recover. He impressed when winning an August 17 Cranbourne jump-out on a testing track, travelling comfortably before getting the better of a handy stablemate.
Blake Shinn takes the reins and Blind Raise has been one of the more popular runners in early markets for the McKenzie Stakes.
5. Wolf Gap resumes after two winter jump-outs, getting the better of American Eagle in the latest. Wolf Gap impressed in his first campaign, launching late to win at Warwick Farm before being spelled following a Group 2 placing.
7. Put To The Sword could be the value runner after having little go right in three career starts. He overcame trouble on debut at Flemington, was caught wide in Adelaide at Group 3 level and again found traffic last start. 2. Closer To Free is harder to assess. He got the scalp of Guest House on debut before narrowly missing in the Blue Diamond, but hasn't gone on with it and his Vain Stakes return was only fair.
Selections: 3-5-7-2.
Race 7 - 3:35PM Ranvet So You Think Stakes Tips (1500m)
With no previous fresh wins heading into the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, 2. Evaporate has generally taken a run to hit his straps. That August 15 return was more than a pass mark, working across to lead and giving a good sight before condition gave out late.
Although he's been a little while between drinks, Evaporate returns to the track-and-trip of his Sandown Stakes triumph last September, when he defeated Transatlantic. That galloper narrowly turned the tables in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at his next start.
Evaporate also mixed it in some hot races last season, including a third in the Golden Eagle, while his best run last preparation came second-up in the Group 1 All-Star Mile. That's strong form for a set-weights and penalties event where several rivals look less suited, and he looks the best bet on the program.
7. Pinstriped looked in the wilderness for a while, but the veteran has turned things around in two winter runs. He was unsuited under a big weight fresh before being the pick of the closers in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, recording the fastest final 200m.
Hard to gauge 10. Zambardo after last preparation. There were excuses first and second-up before he became disappointing, but he remains lightly raced and his Victorian form is strong. Two Cranbourne jump-outs have been impressive, although he's always been a good worker. 11. Immediacy can pull out a fresh and we were with him first-up last campaign at huge odds when second behind Light Infantry Man, who won the Australian Cup two starts later.
Selections: 2-7-10-11.
Race 8 - 4:15PM Charter Keck Cramer Moir Stakes Tips (1000m)
The cleanest profile in a race where most of the established sprinters bring some sort of query belongs to 13. Natural Fling.
Her first-up Quezette Stakes win was excellent and, while this is a sharp rise at just start four, the timing looks right to test her at Group 1 level with only 50kg.
Barrier 13 should be no major concern over the Sandown Hillside 1000m given she can roll forward and there appears to be limited genuine speed outside of her and Cavalry Girl. Jamie Melham also knows what is required with a three-year-old filly in this race after partnering Coolangatta to victory in the 2022 Moir Stakes.
With the tactical edge, proven ability on wet ground, a significant weight pull and a ceiling that still may not have been found, Natural Fling gets the nod.
11. Extragalactic is capable of landing in exactly the right spot from an inside draw. She was scratched from the Carlyon Stakes because of the track and instead impressed when winning a Pakenham jump-out, so the forecast remains an important watch with most of the rain expected late Friday into Saturday.
From barrier two, she can potentially track Natural Fling and Cavalry Girl without having to spend too much energy early. There was no disgrace in being beaten a pimple in The Goodwood at just her seventh start, especially after travelling interstate for the first time.
With two campaigns now under her belt and further improvement still to come, Extragalactic looks well placed to spike first-up at a worthwhile price.
Fresh may be the right time to catch 3. Skybird, despite the fact she is becoming harder to trust. Barrier 12 suits her racing pattern and the Sandown Hillside layout gives her the space to settle before building into her work late.
She was luckless when beaten as favourite first-up in last year's Moir Stakes, having previously produced a Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning victory fresh in February 2025. Her autumn campaign tapered off, but her two best performances came first and second-up, including a third in the T J Smith Stakes on a Soft 7.
With any rain unlikely to hurt and her best recent form coming early in preparations, Skybird has to be respected fresh.
Have to respect the class of 1. Giga Kick, especially if it's wet and the Hillside circuit brings him further into calculations, although his only 1000m win came as a two-year-old and he's 0 from 5 at the trip since.
Selections: 13-11-3-1.
Race 9 - 4:50PM Orbit Logistics Chautauqua Stakes Tips (1300m)
One of the more open races on the program is the Chautauqua Stakes, with cases to be made for plenty. 6. Persian Spirit is on the second line of early betting after we made the Symon Wilde-trained galloper our best bet on an each-way basis via the August 15 Caulfield program.
He was given a good ride there by Harry Coffey, settling close enough and looking to have every chance when the gap came, but was no match for the all-the-way winner. There's still improvement to come from that fast-run race and the extra 100m looks a positive.
Persian Spirit should also handle whatever conditions are served up, having shown himself effective on both Good and wet tracks. As we saw first-up, he's capable of taking a position from a low draw.
One overlooked in early markets is 5. Amenable, who makes his stable debut for Grahame Begg. His trial work has been sound and, although the overall strike-rate isn't flash, both career wins have come first-up. His best two performances last year also came fresh, and his last heavy track run was a Group 1 WFA second.
3. Warnie always needs luck with his racing pattern and arrives second-up after finishing off well in the Regal Roller Stakes that Persian Spirit also contested. All three of his Australian wins have come on bigger tracks, including two at Flemington and another at Pakenham, so Sandown Hillside should suit. 11. Tennessee Bound had her unbeaten run ended last time and now faces more credentialed opposition, although she may be better suited when able to lead.
Selections: 6-5-3-11.
Race 10 - 5:25PM Powerflo Solutions Handicap Tips (1600m)
While tried over further last spring, it's pretty clear 13. Mr Verse is a miler. His record backs that up, with three wins and a second from four attempts at 1600m.
Among those victories was a Sandown Hillside success last August, which he also arrived at third-up. There's a similar pattern this time after opening the campaign in Melbourne before heading to Sydney for a BM78 on August 15.
Mr Verse was well back there and performed honestly but looked a run short. His previous Sydney trip also produced a big spike when returning to Victoria, culminating in that barnstorming track-and-trip success. Working towards a peak performance, he carries 3kg less than at Rosehill and should be right in the finish with even luck under Craig Williams.
The main query with 5. Changing Colours is the weight, carrying 3kg more than she did in her latest victory. The mare has been flying since joining Lucy Yeomans, backing up a good stable debut to record a double across July and August, both on rain-affected ground. Her tactical versatility gives Blake Shinn plenty of options from barrier four and she's a deserving favourite.
The race might fall away a little after the market elects. 15. Somewhere hasn't quite gone on with it after showing early promise but is fit and has raced consistently throughout winter. 16. House Of Lords could be the blowout in the finale if we treat her Caulfield return as a trial. She improved sharply second-up last campaign when winning over this track-and-trip.
Selections: 13-5-15-16.
