Racing heads to Gosford on Thursday, December 18, for a six-race provincial program featuring a mix of maidens, emerging Class 1 types, and benchmark performers.

The Kim Waugh stable is due for some luck.

The Wyong yard hasn’t prepared a winner since October 18, but there have been 12 placings and three fourths from 31 starters since that last victory.

Waugh has accepted with three good chances on the program, and the pick of them looks to be Gloria, who is aiming to go one better after a close second to an odds-on winner.

The daughter of Maurice put a huge space on third via that December 6 contest and, for maiden grade, that event rated well for the card.

She was stepping from 1100m to 1350m there after an honest debut third, and now getting to 1600m, this looks her chance.

She hasn’t put in a bad run in eight appearances and built nicely through her first campaign, producing a runner-up finish at her second start before breaking through in a maiden that held depth.

Leantothemoon was second in both autumn runs, including behind Merchant Gold, who won at metro level next start before placing in Group 3 grade.

The other runner-up came behind Oakfield Jupiter, who has won both starts this campaign at Midway level.

This prep, the mare was unlucky fresh when covering ground, then held up at Gosford second-up, before going down by just half a length to Nesrine, who completed a hat-trick in that November 27 affair.

She brings terrific form for a Class 1, and with Tommy Berry now aboard, it’s D-Day.

Interesting runner on stable debut for Patrick Cleave is Campari Twist, an ex-Victorian who showed potential early last season for Matt Laurie.

The daughter of So You Think won back-to-back races but hasn’t gone on with it, although she has still placed in her past three attempts.

Those runs included two spring outings, with merit in the latest third at Mornington.

She was involved in a four-runner on-speed battle where the other three dropped out, the winner enjoyed the perfect camp, and the runner-up flashed home from back in the field.

Campari Twist also moved well when leading throughout to win a Gosford trial on December 9 in slick time for that morning.
