Cranbourne Tips June 21

Core Protective Group Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)

Cranbourne Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Blue Shield

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr stable has been running well in recent weeks and there is plenty to like about Blue Shield's chances here.

The gelding has recorded top-three finishes in all three starts to date, including a runner-up effort over 1200m at Mornington earlier this month.

Racing on a Heavy 8 track, Blue Shield rolled forward and was only overhauled late in the contest.

The first two home finished more than two lengths clear of third, while the fourth has since franked the form with a victory at Moe on Friday.

Quicker conditions are no concern given his previous efforts on Good and Soft ground, and from an inside draw, he is expected to take catching.

Cranbourne Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Illuminance

Illuminance has an excellent record at Cranbourne, with a win and seven further top-three finishes from nine starts at the venue.

That victory came first-up at the beginning of the season when she took out a Class 1 handicap over 1200m.

The mare jumped from an inside barrier and proved too strong on a Soft 6 track.

She followed that effort with several solid performances before heading for a spell after finishing second over 1300m here in January.

The five-year-old has trialled well ahead of her return and, with Steph Hateley aboard and conditions to suit, she looks capable of resuming with a win.

Cranbourne Roughie - Race 7 No. 8 Outdrive

Outdrive showed ability in his first preparation, with his best effort a fourth over 1600m at Ballarat in May last year.

The four-year-old made an ideal start to this campaign when returning from almost 12 months on the sidelines with a victory at Pakenham.

Competing over 1600m, he came home nearly a length clear after racing prominently throughout.

The son of Overshare handled a Soft 6 surface well on that occasion and followed up with a sound fourth at Benchmark 62 level at Seymour.

While the rise in grade presents a challenge, Jamie Mott takes the ride from a favourable draw and there is scope for further improvement.

Cranbourne Value Bet - Race 9 No. 8 Artbeat

Artbeat made a winning start to his career when successful at Echuca just under a month ago.

Racing on a Soft 7 surface, the gelding scored comfortably by more than a length over 1109m.

That form has already received a boost, with the fifth, sixth and seventh placegetters all winning at their subsequent starts.

The four-year-old was then slowly away when dropping back to 1000m and finishing eighth at Benchmark 66 level at Mornington.

The drop in class is a positive, while the forecast conditions should be more suitable after he failed to show his best on a Heavy 8 track last time, and with blinkers added, Artbeat looks capable of providing value.
