Canterbury Tips November 19

TAB Plate Tips (Race 2)

Canterbury Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 13 Sylph

A half-sister to Booker (2019 Oakleigh Plate winner), Sylph showed potential in three decent form races over her first campaign.

She culminated that prep with a fifth-place finish at Listed level before a spell, and she did cover ground via that Scone assignment.

The filly resumes for Michael Freedman, who has prepared 43 winners at better than 22% this season, which includes four winners from his last 10 starters.

After working home under a hold for third via her first spring trial, Sylph took out a 1045m heat at Randwick and wasn’t knocked about in the process.

She looks well placed to return in a suitable midweek assignment.

Hellbent Yearlings Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Canterbury Best Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Placid Pearl

This Matthew Smith-trained mare is building nicely and after running the fastest last 200m of a Randwick BM78 on November 1, she looks very well placed here.

She gets both the rise in distance and drop in grade third-up, coming back to a midweek BM64 after finding the line well in stronger company.

That followed an unlucky return over 1400m, a trip short of her best, and she was held up from the 300m to the 150m before getting clear and finishing off strongly.

Placid Pearl proved her staying credentials over her first prep before being thrown in the deep end to contest the VRC Oaks.

This is a suitable scenario for her at this stage of the campaign.

Hyland Race Colours Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Canterbury Roughie - Race 6 No. 6 United States

Having missed most of the spring, this could be a youngster Chris Waller has targeted towards a Magic Millions 3yo Guineas path in January.

He’ll still need to progress to warrant that placement, but the raw talent was evident in his two-year-old season when he wasn’t furnished.

The only major flop came in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce at Eagle Farm before a spell, where he didn’t handle the testing Heavy 10 surface.

The 1100m may be on the short side, albeit only inexperience cost him on debut at 1000m rather than a lack of ability.

His recent trials have been encouraging and he appeals at odds with natural improvement expected.

Ranvet Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Canterbury Value Bet - Race 7 No. 8 Hydrometer

Hydrometer bled from both nostrils on March 5, enforcing a mandatory spell and halting her second prep.

She was consistent throughout her first two campaigns, with her last run resulting in a second to Mogul Monarch, a subsequent city winner.

That effort was followed by a Class 1 victory over Llewellyn, who has since won two of his next three, while Bartolf, who also came through that race, has gone on to score at metropolitan level.

At an each-way price we were with her first-up on October 30, where 1000m proved too sharp at Wyong, and she also found trouble that forced her back.

She finished off well and now over an extra 100m and bringing good second-up stats, she finds a far more suitable assignment.
