Australia and New Zealand face off in the first T20I at Bay Oval, with both teams boasting recent series successes. Although New Zealand have an excellent record at the venue, they are hampered by injuries to key players, while Australia arrive in form after clean sweeps against the West Indies. Big hitters like Tim David, Travis Head, and key bowlers Ben Dwarshuis and Adam Zampa could prove decisive. With the Aussies historically dominant in New Zealand, they're tipped to extend their winning run.

Australia will take out the first of the three-match T20 International matches against New Zealand at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on October 1.

New Zealand have an excellent recent record at the venue, having chalked up their past three at the unique ground, but have been hit hard by injuries and will be without a number of the key players that saw them go undefeated against South Africa and Zimbabwe in their recent tri-series, that was held in July this year.

Australia come in with a hardened edge after registering victories against the West Indies and South Africa in their two series in 2025.

The Aussies are spoiled for batting depth with plenty of big hitters in the middle order, but they will have to do it without Glenn Maxwell, who is out after a training mishap. Tim David, who is averaging 70.5 at a strike rate of 210 in 2025 from his six appearances, shapes as a match winner.

Expect Travis Head to get the Aussies off to a flyer, he scored over 30 in quick time in his past two matches against New Zealand in New Zealand, while Ben Dwarshuis has shown that he is more than capable of picking up wickets at the start of the innings or at the death.

Head to Head

Australia picked up a 3-0 series sweep the last time the two sides played each other in a series, which was in New Zealand in February 2024.

The two sides have met on 19 occasions in T20 Internationals and it is the Aussies with the advantage at 13-5, while there has also been a tie. In New Zealand, that record sit at 10-3 in favour of the Aussies.

New Zealand Form & Team News

New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka 2-1 in a series played either side of the new year with both wins coming at Mount Maunagnui, the venue for the first match against Australia. They then defeated Pakistan 4-1 in March, chalking up another win at Mount Maunganui.

Most recently, the Kiwis featured in a tri-series involving South Africa and Zimbabwe and went unbeaten throughout, clinching the title with four straight wins built on strong all-round contributions. Tim Seifert was the standout with back-to-back half-centuries, including 75 against Zimbabwe, while Rachin Ravindra provided consistent top-order runs and spark in the middle overs.

With Matt Henry claiming 10 wickets for the tournament, Jacob Duffy showing his No.1 ranking pedigree, and Ish Sodhi grabbing a career-best 4-12, New Zealand’s balanced attack and dependable batting core underlined their dominance heading into bigger challenges.

Australia Form & Team News

Australia have features in two series in 2025, registering a clean-sweep 5-0 effort against the West Indies as well as a 2-1 win over South Africa in the top end. Mitch Owen made a dream debut in the Caribbean with a rapid half-century and consistent all-round impact, while Cameron Green was player of the series after smacking three 50’s in four innings. Tim David and Glenn Maxwell all produced explosive knocks across the series, complemented by strong spells from Ben Dwarshuis and Adam Zampa.

The Aussies left it late against South Africa, with that series decided in the last game. Glenn Maxwell proved the difference, producing a clutch unbeaten 62 in the final match to steer Australia home and underline the side’s ability to deliver in high-pressure moments. Captain Mitch Marsh rediscovered form with a bruising half-century in the decider, while Cameron Green and Tim David provided important middle-order contributions earlier in the series.
