Canterbury hosts a six-race metropolitan meeting on May 27, spotlighting horses like lightly raced gallopers and tested wet-track specialists. Key tips include Skycatcher (Race 5) as the best bet, Allegro Miss (Race 3) for top value, and Real Baker (Race 4) as a strong favourite, while Sorentina (Race 2) leads the each-way plays. Form and recent efforts are favoured, with wet weather possibly shaping the evening's outcomes. Punters should monitor ground conditions and be guided by recent performance in rain-affected races.

Canterbury hosts a compact six-race metropolitan meeting on Wednesday, with several lightly raced gallopers and proven wet-track performers engaged throughout the card.

A number of runners arrive off encouraging recent efforts and strong form references, while rain-affected conditions could prove key across the evening program.

Canterbury Tips May 27

Toyota Forklifts Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Canterbury Value Bet - Race 2 No. 9 Sorentina

Not much has gone right for Sorentina in both appearances to date, the first of those being a debut fourth-of-eight finish at Canberra on April 17.

The filly was dragged back from a wide draw there and settled against the pattern of an on-speed dominated race.

Sorentina was then sent around at longer odds in a Wyong Super Maiden on May 7 and again had little luck after covering ground throughout the 1100m contest.

She still did well to stick on for fifth in a race that has already produced two subsequent winners, including Hidden Star, who won strongly at Newcastle last week.

Weekend Market, who finished fourth in that race, has also been runner-up either side of that event, including a narrow defeat at Hawkesbury on May 21, while Sorentina should enjoy a much softer run from a kinder draw here under Tom Sherry.

Toyota Forklifts Handicap Tips (Race 3)

Canterbury Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 1 Allegro Miss

A sharp improver fourth-up on Wednesday could be Allegro Miss, a mare who drops further back in grade here after contesting two Midway races this month.

Little went right in either of those May appearances, with the five-year-old settling back from wide barriers on each occasion.

While the 10th-of-14 finish at Scone last start does not read especially well on paper, it was not a bad effort under the circumstances.

Allegro Miss still picked off a few runners late there after being set an impossible task from back in the field.

The mare now finds a suitable setup over the Canterbury 1900m, where her last two victories were recorded in January before a third placing in much stronger company at the track, while her last three wins have come on rain-affected ground.

TAB Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Canterbury Favourite - Race 4 No. 8 Real Baker

This is tougher now stepping up from country grade, although the Bjorn Baker-trained youngster has always shown good ability.

The stable often allows lightly raced horses to pick off one or two country races before bringing them to town.

Real Baker first appeared with a maiden victory at Orange in October, showing plenty of raw ability before a spell.

There were excuses first-up in March when covering ground throughout and the three-year-old was then sent back to the trials, where he won an open-class heat at Canterbury.

He then jumped straight to the lead and bolted in as a $1.50 favourite at Bathurst last start, while the low draw should allow him to get first look at the lead under Rachel King, who has ridden 15 winners at a 24% strike-rate in May.

Ranvet Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Canterbury Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Skycatcher

He briefly looked the winner first-up at Wyong when the split came after settling off the speed, although the gelding lacked a turn-of-foot over 1350m.

The rise in distance on Wednesday is expected to suit the lightly raced four-year-old, while underfoot conditions could also prove key.

Skycatcher bolted in on Heavy ground when breaking through in New Zealand before arriving in Australia.

The gelding also won first-up at Pakenham on stable debut for the new yard on a Soft 6 surface, while both subsequent efforts on Good tracks have still been competitive without producing quite the same finish.

This is technically harder than what he faced first-up, although Skycatcher carries 2kg less here despite getting a senior jockey back aboard, and he can settle handy from an inside alley.
