Doomben Best Bet - Race 4 No. 4 Captain Maverick

The Irish-bred  has shown up well in his three starts since resuming, despite finishing last of 11 over 1400m at Eagle Farm early last month.

The gelding raced over a distance short of his best that day and showed significant improvement when placing third over 1600m at Eagle Farm next time.

Captain Maverick has since stepped up in distance at Ipswich in both subsequent appearances.

The latest of those saw the five-year-old beaten a length when finishing second in a 2170m event held on a Soft 6 surface two weeks ago.

Ryan Maloney partners the Chris Waller-trained gelding from an inside barrier here and similar on-speed tactics are expected at his first attempt at Doomben.

Doomben Value Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Williamtheconqueror

Brian Smith’s representative broke his maiden at this venue on his penultimate appearance.

The son of Heroic Valour scored by just over half-a-length on a Soft 7 surface in March after resuming with a good second at the track the start prior.

The form from that maiden victory has worked out strongly, with the third, fifth and eighth all winning at their next starts.

Williamtheconqueror could finish only seventh on Good ground at Eagle Farm when rising in grade, although there was more merit to the latest Ipswich effort.

The gelding met with trouble in running there when beaten one-and-a-half lengths into fifth and looks value under Boris Thornton despite drawing wide.

Doomben Roughie - Race 6 No. 1 Beaux Rumble

Beaux Rumble is a previous winner over this course and distance and has made only four appearances since scoring on Heavy ground at the Gold Coast in May last year.

The seven-year-old won narrowly that day before finishing well held in three subsequent runs last preparation.

His best effort from that campaign came when beaten just under three-and-a-half lengths in a 1200m event at the Gold Coast in November.

The son of Maurice was then spelled and resumed at big odds with a seventh-place finish at Eagle Farm just over a month ago.

Beaux Rumble is expected to improve fitness-wise from that return and Bella Youngberry’s 2kg claim could prove valuable despite the wide draw.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 2 Sosino

The son of New Approach boasts a strong wet-track record, having won on both Soft and Heavy ground.

Sosino raced mostly on firm surfaces last preparation, including when placing third over 1800m at Rosehill in November.

The gelding was spelled following a down-the-field finish in a Randwick Benchmark 88 contest two starts later.

The Irish-bred had two trials ahead of his return and resumed on the Kensington track at Randwick last month.

While Sosino could finish only seventh there, he was beaten just two-and-a-half lengths in a 1550m Benchmark 78 event and should strip fitter second-up from an inside barrier under Jace McMurray’s 2kg claim.
