With the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic absent this week, there's a chance for another player to collect a prestigious Masters 1000 title - and with Musetti seeded third, the Italian will fancy his chances of going all the way in a relatively depleted field. However, Musetti will need to raise his level - he's struggled since returning from injury and comes into this clash having lost his last two matches.

Fortunately for Musetti, he's received a kind opening draw here. Duckworth is the quintessential Aussie battler and deserves immense credit for repeatedly coming back after countless surgeries throughout his career. However, Duckworth's game is extremely limited and he doesn't have much to trouble the elite players - as illustrated through his 0-15 record vs top 10 opponents. Musetti shouldn't have any trouble in securing his spot in the next round.

Head To Head

Duckworth actually leads 1-0, but their only previous meeting came back in 2021 at the Paris Masters. It was arguably the best tour-level event of Duckworth's career - he prevailed 6-3 3-6 6-3 to advance to his only Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Lorenzo Musetti Form

Musetti comes into this encounter with a 25-10 record on the season, however his progress has stagnated due to an injury picked up at Roland Garros.

The Italian put together a sensational clay swing, reaching the Monte Carlo Masters final, along with semi-finals in Madrid and Rome before also reaching the final four at the French Open, where he was forced to retire with a left leg adductor injury against Carlos Alcaraz.

Musetti opted to return at Wimbledon as he was defending semi-final points from last year, but he wasn't match fit and promptly lost in four sets in the opening round to Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The 23-year-old was back on the hardcourts last week in Washington, but again, he was far from his best in a three-set opening defeat against Cameron Norrie.

The World No. 10 is making just his second Canada Masters appearance after reaching the R16 on debut in Toronto back in 2023.

James Duckworth Form

Duckworth has struggled for the most part this season and comes into this contest with a 5-9 record at tour-level, with his ranking dropping to No. 106.

However, Duckworth is playing his best tennis of the season right now, heading into this encounter having won four of his last five matches overall.

The Aussie made the quarter-finals of Los Cabos a couple of weeks ago, defeating recent Washington runner-up Alejandro Davidovich Fokina along the way, while he's qualified for the main draw in Toronto this week.

Duckworth managed to overcome Juncheng Shang 6-3 7-6 in the first round of the main draw, but it must be noted that his Chinese opponent was playing his first tournament since the Australian Open and was clearly affected by a foot problem.

The 33-year-old clearly enjoys playing in Toronto - he made the R16 at this tournament back during his career-best season in 2021, beating Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz along the way - although both weren't top 10 players at the time.

Verdict

Musetti hasn't been near his best since returning from injury, but he's had a couple of tournaments to get back into the swing of things and should be closer to the sort of tennis that propelled him into the top 10.

Duckworth is 0-15 vs top 10 players and is generally outclassed in these matchups - backing Musetti in straights.
